It's desert. It's going to be dry. Some years are dryer than others. The biggest problem for the SW is too many people using what little water that is there. There are only so many rivers that can be damed and only so much snow melt to fill those rivers and aquifers.
no doubt, desalinasation is the only option long term. I've read where environmentalists are fighting every step of it. Don't they know that is cutting their own throats by impeding the technology? I hope science is able to find a way to do economically and on a large scale. In the mean time, why would people waste water by planting thirsty lawns and ornamentals?Your right. Having spent time in a California desert during my military tour its an extremely arid environment. That said there is an old adage that you don't miss what you have got to till its gone......Does anyone know if they have considered pulling water from the Pacific Ocean? I know that would be an extremely expensive deal but it might be their only other option in the future.
I was in a third world country where they pulled water from the ocean, treated it and used it as drinking water though this country is probably not as big as California.
I think California has a desalination plant somewhere, can't remember now where it is. The problem with desalination plants is the cost of building and maintaining them, plus they can't produce the volume of water needed for such a large population. California created their own problems with insane growth, mass immigration and by trying to farm the desert. The quicker the "big one" hits and they fall in the ocean the better.no doubt, desalinasation is the only option long term. I've read where environmentalists are fighting every step of it. The cost. I don't know if Californians have anything left for the State to tax to pay the high cost. It's still cheaper to suck the aquifers dry and drain the lakes and rivers. For years California was talking about piping water from the Columbia River south. That could be just a pipe dream.Dunno why they dont use that bloody great sunny desert to build solar powered evaporators to take the salt from sea water.
