I know it varies from one area to another, a lot. I like to go to gun shows and shooting ranges and also to talk to veterans, to cherry pick from them people who are more likely to be preppers.
I'm sure you've looked online to see if there are any near you? http://www.uk-preppers.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=13 and such?
In some areas, it may be back to horse and buggy days, or just horses, or on foot. Other areas may have limited fuel supplies, near production and refining facilities. We've all seen the Mad Max movies, lol. But there's also biodiesel, wood gasification, and steam engines. Still, I do think our worlds are going to become a lot smaller, which is why I say that a half dozen guys you know within five miles of you are going to be worth the five hundred you used to know when there was an internet. Building a network locally is worth the time and risk to opsec, in my opinion.
a lot of british "preppers" wont go on American sites because the believe they aren't relevant to british prepping, too much talk about guns and military stuff. most are only prepping for short term events not TEOTWAWKI.Most of the prepper sites over their have a general rule "1. Keep it legal" thus throwing out any talk of personal defense or anything that's counter culture to what the laws are in other words don't talk shit about the government their.. so called freedom of speech is monitored by big brother, same here but over their the government is known to crackdown on anything subversive! I think real preppers from the UK stay away from the forums in the UK and most won't even venture to sites over here out of fear.
I grew up in Oregon and loved it there. But I had to leave about 25 years ago because of the Californication of the state. I moved to North Idaho and bought a large tract of timberland, built a cabin and logged (using horses) trapped and had a couple sawmills. Then I took some overseas jobs and moved to Alaska etc, etc.Wrong or right, they ain't no friends outside the property, I see many preppers becoming raiders. How many outside preppers are hooking up with other preppers for the sole purpose of gathering intel on local private stashes using the illusion of agreeing to mutual aid? As paranoid as that sounds it needs to be thought of, a lot of these mutual aid agreement where as one party doesn't have vested interest in your supplies other than wanting/needing it.
We can see the only road leading to the property from back of the properties edge so any assault here would be extremely difficult, there is a single lane bridge just out of view of the picture that can be taken down by a chainsaw so for me no, I don't want a lot of strangers up here nor will I leave my place outside this area to assist thus any part of mutual aid is out of the question, besides it would take me an hour to get anywhere in the summer time. The river is tame in this photo and generally considered whitewater so trying to go up stream is next to impossible, during the winter the road is impassable, during the spring the road floods so very few travel the road even in good weather.

The snowflakes are doing their damnedest to pass California style laws from environmental to firearms that make it harder and harder for me to stay in this State and i will leave, we have already talked about it even with what I have setup here. If I need to leave I will go to Northern Idaho or Montana, anywhere between Northern Idaho and St Regis, Montana, I know those areas very well plus plenty of water unlike Arizona (where the wife would prefer) I need to follow the water.

Oh man, I can only imagine how it is in the U.K., with your anti-gun laws and more dense population in many areas. I'd have to move north and become a shepherd or something in the highlands. lol
Maverick I think a modest percentage of your appraisal is right, but I think many THINKING preppers are more likely to be thinking longer term and preppers within your area are more likely to unify and become homesteaders who COOPERATE a bit like the Amish and similar sub cultures do. Yes there will be predators and parasites you see em on all the forums. The start and finish of their preps revolve entirely around being armed, they see arms as a mean to an end rather than like most people on here who simply see guns are tools which are only a PART of their preps. We or YOU as a good example are going to have to live like your ancestors did, Living on a fortified homestead or ranch surrounded at times by Injuns. (JoeSA is another perfect example of having to live in a fortified homestead) Using radios to stay in touch with known friendly neighbours you should be able to mutually protect each others interests. You will farm to survive, cooperate with others like you but just like on the Ponderosa ranch in Bonanza you will need to have armed patrols and lookout points. Take the time to re-read J W Rawles Patriots book, I like some of the REDOUBT type thinking he applies to the main characters homestead in Montana.
A good number of preppers I know of around these parts appear to be prepping for conflicts not sustainability,
Not PREPPERS, renegades, chancers, scroungers and brigands, What they gonna do when the fighting stops and all the orange vest owners have wiped out the local critters for food?. IF I repeat IF they are PREPPERS they must look FURTHER than the initial possibly violent events of TSHTF and look to sustainability. Besides WTF is the point of surviving the initial disaster and the violent immediate aftermath then starving to death 18 months later because you have relied on salvaging and stealing to survive. SOONER rather than later food and luck will run out.
I am firmly of the belief that OUR unique skills and mind sets could greatly compliment the skills and mind sets off Off Gridders / Homesteaders/ Small ranchers etc and whilst I would not want to get into bed with them I do feel a familiarity and bit of interaction between them and us would be good. EG buying your eggs or firewood or fresh fruit or something THEY have to trade could/ would / should improve OUR chances in the long term. If you have local food and craft markets etc in your area be regular customers, If you have a local gun shop give them some regular custom
No, they ain't preppers in terms of our understanding never the less they are viewed as preppers and as such mingle with the one's that have prepped in sustainable ways. I view it as why would I agree to mutual aid or befriend legit preppers who have or may have aligned themselves with the militant side of preppers in this area, to me that opens up a security threat to my family and what we have built. In this part of the Country it isn't like Northern Idaho or even Eastern Washington for that matter where neighbors help and look out for other neighbors, we have the extremes of both sides here such as wanting a civil war and the other side wanting to control my land through legislative actions. One side I can keep at bay the other side has the law thus one County (West of the Cascades) dictates for the whole State. My view is not right or wrong it's just a precautionary measure. When I settled and built here it wasn't like this.
