Canned tuna is quite stable and has a long shelf life compared to other canned seafood products. The best way to find the actual shelf life of your canned tuna is to check on the can label and determine the manufactures recommended shelf life. Typically this will be about 3 years. However, if the tuna can is stored in a dry pantry or shelf this can be increased by a few years.

I like tuna in extra virgin olive oil.
Mix it with mayo and diced onion if ya like but it's o.k. right out of the can.

  • Canned white, or albacore (0.32 parts per million of mercury). Children under six can eat up to one 3-ounce portion a month; children from 6–12, two 4.5-ounce portions a month. Adults, including pregnant women, can safely eat it up to three times a month (women, 6-ounce portions; men, 8-ounce portions).
  • Canned light — the safer choice (0.12 parts per million of mercury). Children under six can eat up to three 3-ounce portions per month. Older children and adults can safely eat it once a week. But look out for “gourmet” or “tonno” labels. They are made with bigger yellowfin tuna and can contain mercury levels comparable to canned white.
I don't eat much and in a shtf situation I would have much more to be concerned about
I'd think.
After all I survived a fire in a chemical plant that KILLED all but five of the
sixty first responders.
I'm one of the five. Obviously.
That was 30 years ago so prol'y old age will kill me first.

Father's mother died at 99 a week shy of 100.
Father's dad died of bowel cancer at 80. They ate a LOT of fat solids and smoked meats.
Bad for ya.
Mother's parents live long also.
Booze killed my mom and dad.
I don't drink alcohol.

  • A better alternative is canned salmon (mostly sockeye or pink from Alaska), which is low in contaminants and high in heart-healthy omega-3s. It’s also sustainably caught in Alaska and similarly priced, making it a great choice all around.

My wife is sensitive to something in farmed salmon and can't eat it. No matter whether it's fresh, frozen or canned. She can only eat wild Alaskan salmon.

But she can eat farmed catfish without any trouble...
 
I just wish I liked canned tuna! I'll try a tin of it about twice a year, and then remember how much I don't like it. I guess if shtf, we will all have to eat things we aren't real happy with. Now canned chicken is pretty good stuff, and no Mercury!
 
Isn't the mercury amount going to depend on where the fish was caught? The higher polluted water the high mercury level. Also depends on the age of fish. It effects all seafood, not just tuna. I do wonder how much the canning process lowers the toxic levels.

I feel the same. I remember going to a friends home for lunch, Tuna pasta bake! Joy....I forced it down because she had gone to the trouble of cooking for me, but I didn't enjoy it. I don't have any in my cupboard.

Hey! It's survival. gulp it down it ain't that bad.
Heck I've eaten cat fish on a stick. Catfish on an open wood fire.
I DO NOT recommend it unless you are like I was.

I found 'fresh whole' salmon on sale at the store at $1 something a lb. so picked up two. Canned bones and all for less than $1 for a pint jar. Really it was cents per jar but has been awhile, but if I find another sale like that one, I'll do it again and just rotate my stash. If someone is hungry enough anything will taste good. It can be a real survival situation one day and trust me when I say, you wont be that picky on what you eat. Catfish on an open fire is darn good eating ;).
 
Jeager is a yankee like my wife. He doesn't understand that catfish is awesome cooked right. Them people need to learn what to eat, lol.

I'm a yankee for sure but learned woods craft beginning at age 10 when I ran a trap line
along a wooded river back when muskrats were worth a whopping .75 cents.
I began hunting wood ducks at age 12 with a single shot Winchester M-37 20 gauge.
Wish I had that one back!
I've eaten a LOT of catfish and still do.
My g-friend has a 3 acre "pond" right behind her house teeming with 'gills,
bass, catfish, etc.
I've even eaten suckers but they have so many hair like bones a person could
choke to death on 'em.
I've had channel cat smoked with apple wood.
YUMMY!
 
Okay. I'll take it back, lol. My wife is from Michigan and won't eat catfish because it's a bottom feeder. But, she will eat tilapia, which is a bottom feeder. I don't get it....

I like blackened catfish myself... but not suckers. They are some bony suckers....

A lot of fish eaters get turned off on catfish because the are seen as ugly.
Lack of scales, "whiskers" funny large mouth, etc.
Suckers will choke ya to death on "dem" bones.
I've read that they can be cooked "right" but I don't think so.
One article says to gut, scale, then cut to the bone every inch with a fillet knife.
The reason being the hot grease will cook up the tiny hair like bones.
I dunno and don't want too.
By the way.
I skin catfish first then finish dressing 'em.
Me like 'em.
Catfish egg sacks, (row) are good fried. Really they are.
 
Speaking of catfish...

I won't even eat the catfish here in Georgia. Well, I'll sometimes eat blackened catfish at Chedders.

But the only fried catfish my wife and I will eat is FRESH Mississippi farm raised. I was in Belzoni, Mississippi a couple of weeks ago...the CATFISH CAPITOL OF THE WORLD. No kidding, they have a Catfish Museum, a Catfish Festival, and a lot of buildings have statues of catfish out front (see the Firehouse below)

I had some fried catfish at The Varsity, a Belzoni landmark restaurant/dairy bar (looks just like it did 50 years ago LOL).

We eat a lot of fish here mainly salmon, hot and cold smoking. We also store a lot of tuna (canned and bag types)

One thing that gives tuna and fish in general a run for the money is lamb meat, we eat lamb 4 or 5 times a month. The nutritional value of lamb exceeds fish on many levels, we will be raising more lambs come next year. Between the State, Feds regulations and mother nature affecting our salmon fishing lamb is our backup in a way.

Lamb. I like lamb.
Unfortunately the local markets seldom carry it.
Lamb chops are tasty.
I believe a large local market will stock some if requested.
I ordered a 5 pound prime rib and they got it for me.
When I paid up I about crapped.
Over $100 bucks.
