Britain would be 'only a few meals from anarchy' and cities uninhabitable within days if National Grid is taken down by a cyber attack, experts warn
  • Russia could knock out the UK power grid if it wanted to, experts wanted
  • Failure would cause rioting and looting and thousands of deaths across Britain
  • Modern life is so reliant on electricity it would be a disaster if it failed
  • Plunging temperatures on Sunday and Monday is likely to hike demand for gas
  • Gas reserves could plummet this weekend and leave UK needing Russian gas

Looting and rioting would erupt on the streets and 'thousands and thousands and thousands' would die if Britain was crippled by a cyber attack, experts warn.

Modern life is so reliant on electricity security services said if disaster knocked out the energy grid the country would be 'four meals away from anarchy'.

Such are the risks Britain faces from a belligerent Russia should it launch a cyber attack or shut off gas supplies, as identified by Cambridge University academics.

A catastrophic cyber attack is one of several 'black sky hazards' that could plunge the country into chaos, along with extreme weather, solar storms or terrorist attacks.

  • Mr Weitzdorfer warned looting would erupt as soon as people ate what was in their cupboards and authorities would lose control of the country.

Water supply and sewage rely on electricity, as do petrol pumps, and a communications blackout would mean the government couldn't inform the public.

Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom, who advises the Electric Infrastructure Security Council, said 21st Century society was hopelessly reliant on electricity.

'Modern life would grind to a halt and the complexity of modern society is such that if you one or two little pieces of the jigsaw, the whole thing collapses,' he said.

The National Grid echoed this sentiment, saying a reliable supply of energy 'is our most important job'.

Other than a cyber attack by Russia or other parties, risks included extreme weather, an electromagnetic pulse weapon, terrorist attacks on substations, and solar storms.

    • Russia may be the only option for European nations if they suddenly need more as other suppliers are already running at or near capacity.

Gas reserves across the continent are at record lows after cold spells and the closure of British storage facilities.

But the report said: ‘Gas demand is set to rise again from the end of the week across north-western Europe, bringing potential large-scale gas withdrawals back into play and prompting a likely increase in nominations for Russian gas imports.

Russia’s gas exports to Europe rose to a record 194billion cubic metres last year

‘Given the surge in demand, Russian gas supplies are considered the only swing source of gas under current conditions. Domestic production and other import sources are effectively maxed out.’

Campaigners fear the growing reliance on imports leaves the UK vulnerable at a time of heightened political tension with Russia in the wake of the row over the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

Official figures suggest only a small proportion of Britain’s gas comes from Russia directly. But many major pipelines across Europe start in Russia. This allows state-backed giants such as Gazprom effective control of European gas supplies.

Experts say the UK would struggle to balance its own supplies if there were not enough available on the continent. And they warn that the only nation capable of increasing supplies in times of high demand is Russia.

Gazprom claims it sold just over 16billion cubic metres of gas to the UK last year – around 20 per cent of the country’s total demand. Russia’s gas exports to Europe rose to a record 194billion cubic metres last year.

The UK imports around 44 per cent of its gas from Europe and Norway. In turn, Europe imports around 35 per cent of its gas from Russia.

Britain also bought a shipment of liquefied natural gas from Russia to cope with demand during the Beast from the East weather front at the end of February.

Tory MP Stephen Crabb said: ‘We know Russia deliberately uses its energy resources to create relationships of dependency across Europe and I don’t think we should be putting ourselves in that position. There are lots of options.’

The Prime Minister told the Commons yesterday Britain is looking to other countries to supply gas as it ramps up measures against Russia in response to the Skripal affair.

The UK has become far more reliant on imports in recent years due to the dwindling supply of gas from the North Sea and the closure last year of the Rough storage facility, which at its peak accounted for 70 per cent of the UK’s gas storage.

Mike Foster, of the industry body the Energy and Utilities Alliance, said: ‘If we have greater levels of imports there is always some vulnerability and the risk is greater from events.

‘This is one of those positions where there is an event and the situation could degenerate to the position where Russia does look to reduce the amount of gas it supplies to the West. It loses money if it does, but as a retaliatory measure, it’s conceivable.’

Tim Roache, of the GMB union, said: ‘There is a real danger here. We need a serious strategy and investment in UK energy to make sure we can stand on our own two feet.’

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said: ‘Britain benefits from highly diverse and flexible sources of gas supply. We estimate less than 1 per cent of our gas comes from Russia and are in no way reliant on it.’

The fears over Britain's reliance on Russian gas come as Theresa May - with the backing of the UN - vowed a raft of punitive measures against Russia.

Speaking to MPs, Mrs May yesterday gave Russia's 'undeclared intelligence agents' a week to leave the UK in the biggest banishment of diplomats in a generation.

She also declared the UK will break off 'all high level contact' with the country, impose new sanctions and could seize the lucrative London assets of Putin's cronies.

The UKs entire national food reserve is what is in the system at any given time, and it is no more than three or four days.
its strange that most people in the UK have no knowledge of the "just in time" delivery system, they just expect the food to be in the supermarket at all times, in the last snowy weather I heard a report of 2 guys fighting over the last packet of crumpets on the shelf!! people eh? will they ever learn? probably not.

I'm developing a theory about changes in society. Centralising public services cities which in turn draws more people to live in cities, building nearly all new homes without fireplaces and chimneys or fresh water tanks making then utterly reliant on mains utilities, making driving by car deliberately more difficult but facilitating buses, trains , trams to travel without stopping. Last year a MAJOR campaign supposedly directed at avoiding food waste by telling people only ever to keep 24 hours worth of food in the house. I visited places like Leeds, Manchester, Salford, Oxford, Durham, Reading, Newcastle and note the inner city building program appears to focus on flats and apartments even family sized ones with MINISCULE kitchens. No car parking spaces, and cafes, coffee shops and 24/7s on the ground floors thus driving people to rely almost entirely on external sources for EVERY MEAL. They lie about fighting urban air pollution EG London they are attacking car drivers every way possible especially diesel drivers and when they force everyone onto petrol powered vehicles they will attack the amounts of extra CO2 and other fumes poisoning Londons air. YET whilst they claim Londons air breaks every air pollution law they intend to increase the numbers of flights across London to and from Heathrow airport from 500,000 a year to 749,000 a year plus another 30,000 at London city airport. In London they re now attacking people who have installed wood burning stoves blaming them for Londons air pollution yet wood burners make up less than 0.01% of home heating in London. There appears to drive nearly all retail shopping online again making the masses more reliant on Logistics systems and no longer able to shop in local town centers. At the same time the rich, powerful and influential are building and buying into Gated Secure Communities or Building Iceberg homes to put barriers between them and the masses. In London like South Africa there is now nearly as many private security officers serving the social elite as there are cops. The UK government is now attacking the growing HOME SCHOOLING community trying to force those kids into state schools. Oh and of course yet AGAIN they are attacking gun and knife ownership including now demanding that even AIR RIFLES require licencing.

EVERYTHING to me appears to be an organised effort to (A) Isolate the 10% Haves from the 90% Don't Have as much's and the Have Nots and (B) to CONTROL the masses by having TOTAL CONTROL over Transport, Food, Water, Sewage, Heat, Light, Telecoms, Fuel, Healthcare.

Even in the US some states are ordering OFF GRIDDERs to connect to utilities or face arrests and fines, Federal Land grabs continue, Centralisation continues and you have all seen the HUGE numbers of Bunkers, Retreats, Redoubts, Homesteads, Gated Communities , Privately own islands etc being bought or built by the US social elite snd staffed by PMCs.

Further to my theory above

So what can we do about it?

To the social engineering and manipulation of the masses absolutely NOTHING. its way beyond anything we can control or influence, Labour or Tory, republican or Democrat ALL are just taking turns to shaft us by different routes. Climate change, Over Population, Mass migration,Increasing demand on natural resources such as water and farm land, Rising costs of energy sources, CONTROL of said resources falling into the hands of corrupt Mega Corps and Oligarchs.Urbanisation ( which in turns increases the risk of massive pandemics) . The false promised of the scam that is Socialism, Every more mechanisation putting ever more people out of work. religious extremism ( always flourishes in troubled times).

So basically on a regional, national and international scale its BOHICA, pass the lube.

But as INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, GROUPS we can take POSTIVE steps to mitigate the effects of the inevitable trouble coming over the hill.

We can never normally achieve ALL of our objectives, but most of us can achieve SOME, and every one we can achieve gives us a better chance.
So what can we do ?

In no particular order.
1 Try and relocate away from the Urban conurbations, even if its only to the burbs so long as you try and find places away from main thoroughfares its progress. Few can moved to the AZ deserts or sub Artic Alaska / Scotland but every mile away from the bigger conurbations is a mile further trouble has to travel if its looking for you.

If you cannot MOVE then MODIFY, upgrade your home, Security, Storage, Gas , Electric, Water, Gas etc, find a way to get your SUV / VAN / TRUCK OFF the street, OFF your drive and out of sight. Store extra firewood, coal, bottles gas, diesel, food etc. We can ALL do SOMETHING positive.

2 PREP, Try and get either OFFGRID as you can ranging from totally utility free to simply having disaster survival supplies set aside, EVERY step is GOOD.
Wood burning stove? , Multi Fuel Stove? Camping gas stove ? plus fuel give your insurance against grid failure, it Insulates you from reliance on big brother. Can you perhaps start growing a bit of food for yourselves ? the more you store the bigger your safety net.

3 Caches and stock piles of food, fuel, meds, ammo etc you know the drill I don't need to go over the same ground but the more you store the more secure you are.

4 LEARN, knowledge is power, yes you have a lovely $2000 dollar AR15 can you field strip it in the dark?, can you clear a blockage in the dark? Can you do first aid, can you service your own vehicle? change a tyre? Have you a Ham licence are you TOTALLY familiar with the full capabilities of your Ham rig and CB rig, is that the BEST Antenna for the job ( and is it out of sight from the road)? Can you fix that Compound bow and change its servings? Nice boots and rucksack have you walked 15 miles with those boots on and ruck loaded with kit?

4 Barter goods, TPTB are trying to drive us all towards a cashless society because if they achieve that then they have almost total control over us.

5 Keeping your head down, Don't openly join political parties, protest or campaign groups, if you do want to donate or help a cause do it anon, the less accusations that can be levied at you the safer you and your dependents are. Lower your ONLINE presence, do you need to be on Facebook, twitter etc?

6 Plan, the man with the plan CAN, explore as many alternatives as you can from gun choice to food selection to bug out routes the best vehicle choice, udse that brain you were born with as look for the alternatives. ANY alternatives to submitting and complying to Big Brother.

As far a put in goes, I would not be surprised if he lays claim to more ‘lost territory’ like Crimea in the near future.

Da Komrade, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Moldavia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Austria. Finland, all lands belonging to the Russian peoples and according to RT all desperate to become part of the Russian Federation.

The British sealed the lid on themselves by allowing in so may Muslim Spies, Terrorists and economy eating Foreigners....

Really??? Let this RT come to any of these countries and declare it to someone from the citizens in the eye. Fractured extremities and discolored internal organs will be for him the best outcome after such a statement.
P.S. You forgot to mention Ukraine. We so go to Russia that for 4 years we have been fighting against Russians ...
