Five cases of malaria have been confirmed in Florida and Texas, the first time locally acquired malaria has been reported in the US in 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.0 The majority of malaria cases in the US are in travelers or other people returning to the country from nations where there is transmission of malaria. The last outbreak of locally acquired malaria in the US was in 2003, when Palm Beach County saw eight such cases.3 Malaria can also spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, unsafe needle-sharing practices, and from mother to fetus.1 Since October 2021, WHO recommends broad use of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine among children living in regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission.
