Even at 93million miles away, the sun is so powerful. It you read any of the doomsday books about cme/emp's then you realize we should all be at least somewhat concerned about these events.
I don't worry about CMEs,,,,,I don't think they are a real threat,,,,come on it's not going to shut anything down for good,,,,,they are more aggravation than a end of times situation

CME's/EMP's aren't a life ending event as such, but they could be a life changing one, one that would put most of the population in a mad panic.

I disagree here. Granted, there hasn't been a strong one for over a hundred years now, but it's like rolling dice. One day a big one will hit again. Our grid is more susceptible to it than most know. Without reliable electricity for a year or more this country would be hurt badly. Sure, some of us in the country would do fine, but can you imagine a place like Manhattan? Most of the buildings aren't usable without electricity. It is hard to imagine people having to cook over a wood fire on the sidewalk in any large city.

I think that realistically DIRECT inpacts on the ground from a CME are rare, BUT In space you could see some pretty serious shit hit the hundreds of comms and GPS and Radio /TV Satelites which would take quite a while to sort out especially as many of them now are no longer built with maneuvering thrusters. So PHONES, GPS, TELECOMS, INTERWEB etc could take a hammering. On a lesser scale many radio frequencies used by Amateurs could be f--ked up for days.
now there it is f-ed up for days not weeks not months or years,,,,,just days,,,,,no worse than a severe storm,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe not as bad

i read somewhere that if an EMP blew all the relays and connectors in the UK power grid it will take 2 YEARS to replace them all as they are not made in the UK and have to be made by special order and each takes a couple of months to order, make and deliver, that's if they have enough engineers to replace them.
can you imagine the British population sitting in the dark, calmly and meekly for 2 years waiting for the power to come back on? there will be riots and mayhem on the streets!

That's only from low level ones that don't hit the ground. There are huge bursts that are capable of major damage, we just haven't been in line with one for a long time. Let's just hope it will be a few thousand more years before it happens again.

Trouble is the unknown as many scientists warn, Imagine if California and NYC could not watch the Kardashians or Chicagos welfare system got knocked out, or the gay porn websites for TX got knocked offline !!!!!!!! EG if the CME agitates the Magnetic fields around the earth hard enough it can create an EMP type problem would could be more damaging. I dont bother worrying about such issues I just accept there is a risk and work to mitigate the worst of its effects, So I have GPS and Cell phones and use the Interweb but I'm not reliant on any of it. buts its prudent to be aware of it. Personally I think the US is more likely start start another war than for us to be damaged by a CME / EMP, Everytime the US develops major issues its leaders inevitably look for some poor foreign sap to blaim then attack them all to divert attention from issues back home. Used to be us Brits, Then the French and Spanish, then the Brits again, then the Spanish in the Fillipines, then the Mexicans, Then Canada and the Brits, Cubans, Comchis, Vietnamese, Arabs, Afghans, Russians , Inuit, Columbians. Trouble at home in the US usually ends up with so one being attacked.

Another Carrington event is possible......Mostly what blows things like this out of proportion is the Doomsayers who make ridiculous predictions predicated on fear and money....Its a lot like some religions who tell you to send your money to the lord but give you their address...WTH!

I don't think gun sales, prepping or off gridding are really fear or doom mongering there is nothing wrong with being ready for a disaster. There is a difference between being ready and trying to incite fear to make people prepare for something thats not coming.
