Planned Underground Community

What is anyone's idea about this topic? What I am interested in is the ability to score enough land to produce one very large community. Just like the federal government does, they have a list of necessary people in the event that the U.S. must start over, but their list for obvious reasons cannot include everyone that has a specialty. So with that said, would it be possible to sell the idea to those that are willing to invest money into it, to ensure they have a safe place to go? Any ideas on this would be of great help.

im thinking that having a underground community is pretty much like having a 10x20 storm/bomb shelter for 5 people.everyone will/might become antsy after a certain length of time..for example.lets say you and 4 others go into a storm shelter while a big storm blows through..and it last for 2 hours to do so..someones gonna want to get out of there,just after a few minutes of being in there.now i ask..why would it be any different in a underground community?only thing i see different in the 2 situations.it'll take longer in a underdround community situation..but thats only if there's plenty of room to move around.and diff things to do..

I think some of the old time British survivalists had something called a "mutual aid agreement" or something similar but I haven't heard these mentioned for several years.

for $200k you can buy a large chunk of ground the problem is the cost of building it,depending on what you want to build I don't think $10mil would touch it,,,I would say each member would have to put up around $200k to make it go maybe more,,and where are you going to find at least 50 people with that much money to spare,,,,so I don't think it can happen

in my opinion,a two way sword,nice in the beginning,but eventually someone will get "cabin fewer" and most likely risk all and everything just to get out.
for a short time an underground shelter could be useful,later as storage facility, a few here have alredy mentioned that pesky thing called money and it will undoubtly take a lot in the beginning phase,unless you come over something "pre made" like an old salt mine for example.
but anything pre-made will be on maps and minds of others.

there are so many variables to take into consideration and the most important would be people; a helluwa job to sort out skills,compatability and so on.
it's hard enough with family,this from my own experience;who knows what and can do what,keeping track who possibly have some illness that will affect their capabilities and along those lines.

There are lots of people with the same idea. Everyone can see how vulnerable our system is. Hell, even our White House was selling the idea of learning to grow your own veggies. I have seen some high end projects going into old missile silos on tv. Multi million dollar projects for a select few. There could be a simpler version of this. I'm not crazy about the underground thing myself, at least not full time. Having a cave or safe room built into a hill is one thing, but full time in the dark would be hard to deal with both psychologically and logistically. Where do you put waste, produce food, etc. I read the novel 'The Patriots' recently. They had a group of preppers with a plan that was still quite an investment, but was more realistic for people. I think being in a defensible remote area with natural resources is almost as good a plan, and a whole lot more realistic. All I am sure of is it will be a lot easier right now to begin working on a set up than after there's a disaster. Even with all the money in the world, after shtf resources will be scarce. Hardware stores would be stripped clean in three days.

Im not sure that I'd want to live in a hole in the ground for any length of time. I've spent quite a bit time in underground mines and think even a good sized well equipped bunker would get pretty small after a few days.
I found an old gold mine on my property that I may stash some stuff in but no way could I live in it.

caves are one thing but being permanently underground would be a no-no for me.

it would be a helluwa transition from day-dwellers to underground dwellers,a short stretch,yes,doable,but for a longer period,don't think so,I would miss the open skies.

I think an above ground community with access to a sizable bunker would be more likely to succeed . Being in the open outdoors would give people plenty of breathing room and would be less likely to crack under stress. This way you can grow and preserve crops ,hunt and preserve meat and stock that bunker up !

I actually think a small community is a great idea. It could run as any normal town, with a council, elections etc. being selective on who and what trades to let join would make a good strong community. I'd consider joining such a place.

not me thanks, any "selecting" who is allowed in or more importantly who isn't allowed in would put me right off! and who has the right to do the selecting? that's the start of the slippery slope, nope i'm off on my own thanks. in any case I don't do people and I don't do community.

I think as long as there is a group that is the governing body that is elected or even rotated periodically deciding on these things, then I would be ok with it. The problem is when you have one person in charge. That power tends to go to a persons head eventually. Then they want to be sleeping with all the women and forcing you to drink cool aide....

yes, there will always be some one who thinks they should be in charge, I cant be doing with that. i'm better off on my own anyway, always have been.

I'm not a real social person either, mostly because I'm busy all the time, but do believe we are social animals. Not only are we wired to be around others, but we can accomplish so much more as a group vs individuals.

It isnt a case of who thinks they should be in charge -hence the electoral system! but in any case if i did something like this my community would be made up of family and close friends doubt i would allow any outsiders.

It is much easier to relocate in a remote part of the world than to consider moving and building underground. I'm always in with guys like mav, Brent, jonte ,jim and arcticdude. You guys are so much like me I trust most of you guys greatly, maybe not because of the amount of your preps ,but because you prep. I dont know , but I see the effort yall put into it, and I know the work it takes to do it, so this is a tip of my hat to you guys. Effort is worth more than skill and knowledge to me, but you guys aren't lacking that either. My hats of to you, and if any of you guys ever need a hand , shoot me a line
