Well, compound is a stretch, but I am building a place for the kids to live on the property here. I am truly having fun even if it's hard work. I've been working on their place for about 9 months now, and am making trim and installing it now. I am letting my son do most of the work with the business right now and am spending most of my time getting the place ready for them to move in before long. I will start building cabinets pretty soon, but am going to start making interior doors in the next day or two. The woodworking is what I like doing the most. I really am having fun here. So back to the point of this thread. I think it's a good idea to put some thought into making your place so that if we do experience a major disruption you can have some people group together somewhat comfortably. Having a group to share the daily tasks of eating, security and other chores would be pretty important.

I have 4 kids and there families here plus my dads old ranch hand (retired) and his family all living on the property. I think it's great Brent, it makes life easier especially after you retire! :)
I tried retiring once, and my son talked me into going into business again. Maybe I should have been more selective on who lives here..... seriously, having family around is priceless.

we don't all get along well with our families ,,I sure as hell don't,,life it is not all peaches and cream,,,you guys are lucky

I get along with my kids and the grand kids, I don't have to say anything, they all get everything done without question. My siblings and there families is another story, oh we get along but I have no desire for them to live here nor do they have desire to be here and that's suits me just fine. This place is for my kids/grand kids not the rest of my family ;)

No doubt there are some in my family I don't get along with, as in any other. As a matter of fact my son and his wife are about the only ones I would have considered this for. I take that back. When the place is done they will move out of the cabin on the back of the property and I'm going to try to get the MIL to move into it. She is in her 70's and recently widowed so I'd like to have her close to help out with things. I guess I'm lucky there, not many guys can genuinely say they like their mother in law. Anyways, this will make three live able places here for now. I may consider one more down the road,

Bringing my family closer together was always my dream too. You're a lucky man Brent. I offered to give both kids a hundred acres to come live closer. It was on another section of the ranch about 25 miles away. Both kids turned it down. At least we're all in the same state now and within an 8 hour drive.

None of us know what the future holds. You may end up all grouped together one day. I don't think blood relatives means squat by the way. Good people are hard to find, either in a family or aquaintenses. My son is a step son, no blood lines there, and is the easiest to get along with of four kids. If times get rough down the road I would likely bring in at least a few couples.
