Hey yall my Name is HillBilly......I have been prepping for over 10 years now and am newly married to a prepper. We are looking at quails and goats, we have food, water etc....we also have our own website to help others, but i love just knowing if something comes my way i can handle it. I enjoy life.....I write on blogs for prepper sites, i sell seeds etc so i can be at home doing what needs to be done yet still make money for us to continue our own prepping. My husband invents things to help other prep and he love what he does as well. He is a granite salesman by day and a prep inventor by night....busy busy guy.

We look forward to reading what everyone has to say and hopfully learn some new tricks of the trade.

Howdy from a Texan .... and welcome to the forum and family...there's quite a few knowledgeable folks here that'll gladly tell ya what you need to know,or at least point ya in the right direction and/or give ya a good idea or2..and by all means jump right on in with any replies you have on a topic.

well thank ya thank ya......i look forward to learnin or share the knowledge i have. i like helpin people when i can. i got some family in the galvaston and houston areas. been there a couple of times. most of the time my two cents are like a flame on the open water lol. i seem to have things to say that are outta the ordinary, so to speak.

Good ole Alabame....I love that area too, like many i just think the southern states are getting to populated. the growth around the southeast is crazy and a lot of people from the north are coming here. I dont have anything against them, just larger cities becoming over populated
 
We are getting invaded from the north, south, east, and especially the west. Kalifornians are running here. They are trying to take over Austin.

lol, i dont doubt that as cailie is expensive, awful, and rude. if you aint loaded with money you dont belong there. also there arent really any places to prep there as a most of the land is taken or urbanized

Welcome to the group from yet another Texan. I see your looking into goats. Well they are my absolute favorite animal here in our little farm. So much personality!
 
I am looking at goats, not sure what kind to get, maintenance, feed things like that. I have quail and love them. I also have rabbits and sell heirloom seeds. I write for a couple of blogs so alot of information comes my way lol. always looking to learn and share. If you have insight on goat, ill be listening
 
I am interested in both. I raise my animals for dual purpose. Quails serve as eggs for rehatch or selling and after i get a new set of bird some are slaughtered for dinner. Rabbits i sell some bunnies for pets, some for snake food and after i have a few litters i eat some of them. so as you can see i like multiple uses. I thought i could sell the goat milk but found out i can not unless i go through the USDA and that is a pain in the butt.
 
Thats awesome. At the shooting range i met a woman from the Netherlands she was so pleasant to talk to. she explained over there they can not do these thing. Makes me love the US even more. hope things in Finland are good.
 
If you plan on milking I have found the easiest for both you and your does is to start getting used to having their teats touched early on. Even babies will cock out a leg. That is the natural stance when milking. I start rubbing them all over, including the underside as soon as they are born. The first ones I started milking, I did not do this and had a time of it the first couple weeks till they learned to routine. I do put them in a milking staunch but they can and will kick if they are not used to being touched in that area. It can be a real challenge with a newbie so the easier you can make the experience in you both the better. If you can not get her to relax she will hold in her milk as much as possible.

The one thing I can not stress wnough, if you need to supplement their feed with grain, only buy goat food. It has to actually say goat food, not all stock or sweet feed that has a picture of a goat on it. The boys tend to get crystals in their urinary tract and if not treated will kill them. I put out loose goat minerals and keep baking soda out for them at all times. Oats are something I give for my milkers while in the staunch. Add in a little molasses or honey and they are in heaven.

That is so helpful, thank you for taking the time to give me good advice
 
Another thing is when buying hay, look for a good quality that has been kept dry inside. Mold on hay will cause your goat to get very sick and possibly die. Green acorns are another thing you don't want them to gorge on. My neighbor cut some oak limbs and threw them to his goats right before he left for a weekend trip. They were all dead when he got back. As long as they have no acorns on the limbs it's fine, but I don't even do that. There are oak trees in their pastures and as they drop, a little eating is ok, just not too much.
