I live in an urban area and until i get out to the country im stuck. I think its best to help my neighbors survive rather than shoot them when they try to come get whats mine. Does anyone have any ideas on wood burning stoves water catchmnet and filtration from everyday items or just other usefull stuff. I believe these skills are necessary because you might find yourself in a situation wear these macgyver skills might be good to have.

I live in an urban area too and I would advise against helping out your neighbors. If you do help out your neighbors, your stock will diminish very rapidly , if not get taken right off the bat. Many people will not be great full but will be jealous that you have supplies and they don't. Unless you are willing to donate ALL your supplies, keep them and the information you have supplies to yourself. JMHO

What Urbanprep said is true. However helping your neighbors while still obtaining OPSEC about your prepping is ideal. Have friendly conversations about an approaching storm or other short term disaster situations. Ask them the question, what do you think I should do before this storm arrives, it might be a bad one? Then add onto whatever advice is givin.

You can then privately store some extra personal water filters (a neighbors entire family can survive with one for a considerable time. Store an extra few hundred pounds of white rice, it's cheap and stores very long time. Clean water and rice supplemented by small game and foraged edibles can sustain your neighbors for months after whatever food supplies they had is gone.

Yea im not sharing my supplies. I know you can spend a millions dollars on supplies but the big question is water filtration from everyday items. I can share knowlege. Like hey you can eat this plant or maybe dig a hole at your downspout to catch water and this i hiw you filter it.

Yea i plan on that but how do i stop the sewer from backing up in to my house
You could always cut and cap the line outside. If your in a low area that chronically gives you trouble you could always install a valve in the line now that would be easy to shut off when the power goes out. That would solve your back flow issue but dosent solve you being able to flush your toilets. Years ago one of my first places I moved into was a trailer with no septic. I dug a hole, installed two 55gal drums with holes poked in them and put rocks around them. I ran the drain line into them and it worked fine for as long as I was there. This was in Fla though and the sand had great drainage though. While installing the valve you could install a diverter to switch over to your own drainage solution. All I am sure of is projects like this are easier to do now while you have hardware stores to go to than after an emergency happens.

How close is it? It should not unless its made improperly. You put in a trap box. Plus your toilets have traps. As long as your water overflow is not blocked or there is no blockage in your pipes it will not back up.

Wood burning stoves are great for heat and cooking. If you can’t do that set up where you are learn about a rocket stove. They can cook using common scrap building materials and use small amounts of fuel. Great way to cook in a pinch. Look up zeer pot as well. It’s a simple solution to referigeration without power.

I thought he was talking about being in a low spot and the cities lines back up when their pumps stop working. There are lots of low areas that this can happen.

In my town the sewers back up in the basement every couple years when it rains hard. With out the pumps pumping i can see where that will become an issue. I expect more backups when the power goes down. I have thought about capping it off but putting in a valve now is genius.

Ahh your in a city. A shutoff valve is best. Then use a portable toilet.
Yes im stuck in the city right now but working on getting out. My theory is if i can show my neighbors to survive they may fight off the marauders instead of joining them and taking my stuff. I have no plans on letting them know i have stuff but i think its easier to show them some survival stuff rather than shoot them later on. After the smoke settles we are going to have to rebuild.

I was on a different forum and they basically told me how stupid i was. The one person that came up with a good idea was told how stupid she was. I know surviving the city is gonig to be hard but i dont think its impossible. I appreciate all the suggestions

nothing in life is easy, surviving definetly isn't.
city in a shtf is so complex place it's mind boggling and all advice is welcomed, what puzzles me
is the amount of articles here, where they say ; have supplies, make it last at least 72 hrs and so on..5 years ago there were none.

I think the isolation from hordes of people will mostly help the people in the country but that isolation can be a detriment too. If all transportation of food and services stop, having more hands to help with daily tasks of surviving will be a big advantage. Neighborhoods banding together could have some advantages when working together. Personally I feel the country is better overall but we all work with what we have and can afford.

One thing I've done for years.is i pay attention to the ppl living around me.when it comes to what they say and do in everyday life.to how they treat others and myself alike.then there's their lifestyle. Etc etc.what i learn from all of that.will tell me who i can call on for a helping hand or not in the here n now.and in a wrose case situation. Learn who you can get in good with.including maybe doing a lil something for someone here n there.that can be a added plus if you need a helping hand doing something.

Yes, surviving in the city is doable. It does require different skill sets and knowledge base. The camo hunting outfit, may not help much, if at all. Knowing where the over looked water supplies are will help. Knowing how to open locked doors will help. Knowing how to rig a rain water harvest system will help. Having enough supplies to outlast the rest of the city folks is a must. If the average person/ family in your neighborhood has one week of food, you need at least 4 weeks. The same with water. I am not saying 4 weeks is a enough, what I am pointing to is you need to make sure you can outlast your neighbors, so you do not have to expose yourself to get supplies. My supplies are not counted in days or weeks but in months / years. Follow the advice you have been given by other member and you will do well. You goal is to out think, out last and out survive the rest of your neighborhood. Just like the TV show, except if you make a mistake, you get voted out permanently from living.

I'm not saying ALL neighborhoods will become dog eat dog hellholes, but only extraordinary neighborhoods will escape from the inevitable spiral into bedlam. Once there is no rule of law, and resources become so scarce that there is not enough to go around, goodbye nice peaceful neighborhood, and hello Lord of the Flies

I have been looking for ways to self heal with nature. I worry about what will become of our great nation and how we can survive sickness after a major tragedy. I remember my father teaching me how to gather and what I could eat in the wild. This led me to investigate self healing through natural herbs and plants. I recently found this and was thinking about ordering it. You seem to know about some of these things. Would you take a look and tell me what you think about it? The Lost Book of Remedies

There is good info in that book, however you can download the same information here in our library thread of related materials. I posted a huge free pdf files link with thousands of files for survival.
