Can you cram in 12 hours all the survival essentials you would need to save your family for several months?

That’s all the warning you would have before a solar storm takes out the power grid, according to a new government report from the United Kingdom.

The Space Weather Preparedness Strategy report revealed that the warning could be as little as 12 hours before a coronal mass ejection (CME) hits Earth and sends us all back to a 1800s existence.

It typically takes one to three days for a CME to arrive, and predictions are accurate to within about six hours.

“Generally speaking, the faster the ejection, the greater the potential impacts,” the report said. “The [1859] Carrington Event, for example, travelled to Earth in as little as 18 hours. It is therefore likely that our reasonable worst case scenario would only allow us 12 hours from observation to impact.”

Well soon to be magnetic shielding in the holiday home and mini cooper coupe will protect them and the star fort swartberg is already shielded so I'm good.

Solar storm isn't much of a problem, just turn it off, unplug the device from all exterior sources.

True enough. Different than a weaponized EMP weapon effect. Still though, this would still take out infrastructure as you can't turn it all off, and that's where the problem really is.

I would be more concerned about theft and night crawlers then the solar storm itself

Once the street lights go out, we're in for some pretty rough nights alright. I give it 3 nights after the event before the rioting and looting begins, and I'm probably being generous.

I've read that it could take a year plus to repair the U.S. Grid after a major flare. I don't think there would be anything left of the major cities by then. I also think of all the skyscrapers, with no running water or windows that open. Remind me why people live in large cities again?

id be surprised if it took them to get the power grid up n going again,in less then 3 years...and they live in large cities on account, they dont know any better..

it'd take 2 years to repair the UK power grid, can you imagine the sheeple sitting still with no lights no cooking no computers for 2 years? no me neither.

the government, well what's left of it would be digging mass graves..people would starve to death....and it would be a bummer to miss contact with DPF and you guys and gals.

we can always go back to carrier pigeons or adapt pony-express over here....or take one illegal and tell him that take this letter over there..you'll find a wonder wall which gives you free money ;)

Ever heard of Mike Tyson he trains racing and carrier pigeons. Another up side is that the petrol stations would malfunction and anyone could take any fuel they want simply by pulling the trigger.

"If the earth is hit by a direct solar flare, some of which can be 14 times the size of the earth, scientists from NASA and the National Academy of Sciences say it would cost the nation alone up to $2 trillion in the first year. It could take four to 10 years to recover and affect 90 percent of the U.S. population, meaning widespread starvation and death."

In Government records it is said 2/3rds of the population would possibly die in the first year. FERC has been trying to get the grants to fix a lot of this to no avail.

The trouble with using horses as carrying the messenger and messages is that it requires an awful lot of resources and that's not counting OPSEC for each station, people that are hungry is going to see horses as one giant steak also remember there are far far more people today then there where in the 19th, 18th and 17th century. We can romanticize what was just keep in mind it's just not realistic today nor can it be, the dynamics that govern human nature today is far different then it was yesterday.

90% has always been the expected die off this side of the pond, and forget about recovery, things will never get back to "business as usual" not with that amount of die off it wont.

not many, 85% of the population lives in cities and are scared of the countryside. and it isn't such a small island, sure its crowded in the big cities but Britain isn't just big cities any more than America is.

true about..one giant steak also remember there are far far more people today then there were in the 19th, 18th and 17th century...people ate/eat dogs horses and what ever,in the way of routine way of life for centuries..and it'll become more for survival than anything else,in a such situation.
and like bigpaul said...90% has always been the expected die off this side of the pond, and forget about recovery, things will never get back to "business as usual" not with that amount of die off it wont.no it wont go back to the it was..at least not in our life time(s)...

so many people will be dead within 6 months from starvation, dehydration, disease, freezing, heat,to being killed for whatever reason(s).eventually there wont be enough people to get things up and going (i guess) within 10 to 20 years

with that many dead we could be looking at a century or more, in 1750 the population of this country was 6 million or 10% approx. of todays population, with a 90% die off that's the kind of numbers we are talking about, and 1750 was what? 265 years ago if my arithmetic is correct, that what we would be looking at, not 10 or 20 years.

i know there'll be a extremely large die off.and that chances are,it could be within 5 years.but i also figure that i give myself some lean way on being mistaken about that..
