1st of all.and for those that dont know it.my mom had shoulder surgery on 01/19/2017,and came home on 01/21/2017.thats when i got a freindly reminder to how important it is to always have certain items in the car.

2ndly.i had removed certain items from the car 2 days before christmas so id have room for the presents, and other items.,in which i hadnt put most of the items back into the car since then.

but yet,i did have what was needed for the trip home on 01/21/2017..that is,a spare tire(factory spare)..hydraulic floor jack.2 foot long 2x10 for setting the jack on when needed.2 pieces of 4x4 to block the tires, for when the car is jacked up.i also had my rechargeable and portable jump starter with air compressor, power converter that plugs into a car lighter,1-30ft and 1-100ft extension cords..yes,all of these things came in handy that day.on account we had a flat tire.i first tried airing up the tire..only good that did,was to teach me,the tire will no longer hold air.of course, this includes me having to changing the tires.and that allowed us to get home, with no issues..but yet there would of been issues if i didn't have these things..the one thing i need for times like that.that is a cheater pipe to use with the lug wrench..other than that,i have everything in the car, that i need for times like that.and that includes some hand tools in a toolbox, bottles of water.and other items..

I have a lot of weird things, along with normal ones.

I mean, there's the toolbag (wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, etc.)
Hydraulic Jack, spare tire, spare access tool, 4 way lug wrench
Duct tape, electrical tape
Spare fluids, collapsing funnel, collapsing bottle, cleaners
Fuel Can, fuel treatments (diesel)
Siphon pump, clear tubing
Thermal blankets, spare canned food, some bottled water, TP
Spare screws, bolts, wires, fuses, signal repair tape, spare bulbs
(2) Spare jackets (for the gals)
A couple of canes (wife and I need them from time to time, though not in a while)

My "life" bag (this has things like meds, HBA stuff, spare socks, sewing kit, eyeglass repair kit, feminine supplies, all kinds of "life" stuff that you'd just be surprised at needing while out and about sometimes. Can't tell you how many times I've saved the day with this bag...run in the stockings? No problem hon, spare in the bag!

Then of course, my get home bag.

I'm probably forgetting a few things too.

the extra fluids and funnels i have.extra fuses by all means,do come in handy time 2 time..there's even a set of ramps in the car,for moms scooter.but yet they can come out, seeing how we aint been useing them,yet...i dont have the winter stuff in yet.like jackets, punchs n all..

hmmmm,,,spare tire and jack and a number of tools,I always have my walking stick, there is always a couple gallon jugs of water in the truck,,,,a leash for the dog just in case he is with me,several knives and a TOMAHAWK,,,,,the thing has been behind the seat for years, a couple water bottles there is always a gun in the truck,,,I rarely get to far away from home to walk it in a day so I don't have any food in the truck, not much point in that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm sure I am missing something but this is what I can think of right now,,,,,I should put rain gear in the truck,,,

Hope your mom is doing better.

I was really happy to Lean my Honda CR-V came with a recessed trough for a spare tire in the back. The spare is mounted on the outside of the back door, so it was an empty space waiting to be used as an emergency stash bin. I filled it with all kinds of stuff. I do believe the mre's could be chunked after a couple years though. They don't hold up in extreme temps for long. Guess that gives me an excuse to go through everything again. Am sure the batteries could be switched out again too.

mom is doing better..

our spare is underneath..but there's a compartment across the back, and just inside the rear hatch.it's in use with floor jack and other stuff

I should put rain gear in the truck,,,

I have a nice poncho in my GHB...but yeah, in the "life bag", I have 4 of those little $1 ponchos...just in case. I also typically have two full size umbrellas behind the back seat of the truck. Lots of storage space there.

i have a rain suit, and 4-6 umbrellas in the car.in which we've used 2 of the umbrellas a few times..and the one i use has a flashlight in the handle, for shineing ahead of me,wwhen it dark our.or what ever.

I carry the normal items in my vehicles; food, water (I don't leave in vehicle in winter) wool blankets, rain gear, tool box, spare fuses, flash light, jumper cables, flares, tow straps etc. In winter I never go anywhere without the following; tire chains, snow shovel, extra clothing, snow paks, fire making kit, more tow straps and a dead man AKA earth anchor (for winching to if no tree is available). This has been a hard winter and I've had to use many of the items listed here. Carrying extra clothing and being able to make a fire has been a real life saver for me.

Aside from the normal/common sense things. I keep a pair of hi-lift jacks, shovel (sort/long handle), axe and chainsaw with 2.5gal of fuel all locked in the box in all my trucks.

Even though 2 of my trucks have forward wenches I also carry a portable rear hitch wench. All the cars have floor jacks.

Thanks for the reminder of wool blankets. I have a cotton comfotor/blanket in there now. Would really suck in the rain. One thing though, I would probably stay with the vehicle in normal circumstances, so cotton would stay dry inside. The car itself, running or not, is a great shelter. Even has a handy fire starter built in, aka a 12v battery.

Y'all think it's tough in the lower 48... imagine having a flat in Alaska. ;)

LOL.

I still remember my mom accidentally driving out onto a frozen lake when we were in Alaska. Not like you could really see the difference, until you knew from surroundings. I was just a kid, but I'm like, "Mom, you're on the lake!"...she's like, "I know, I know!".... LOL.

Luckily, it was frozen pretty solid, so we just drove off it (while I made ice cracking sound effects that nearly got me slapped...)

a can of fix-a-flat, some replacement bulbs for taillights, alcohol wipes, shovel, handwarmers.

Seriously thinking about getting rid of my auxiliary tank and getting a locking toolbox there instead. Especially since right now, that tank needs to be drained, cleaned, etc. to be usable again (and when it is, costs too damn much to fill anyhow). I don't see me ever needing to have a range of over 1100 miles. Even post SHTF (maybe ESPECIALLY not then).... The toolbox would be FAR more useful, though it seems that behind the back seat is some weird extradimensional space. My wife is always amazed how much stuff is back there, lol.
