Here is my problem and maybe you can help me make a decision. My next rifle does not come with any sights. It is scope mount only. I have selected both of these scopes but due to budget constraints I can only get one at time. I have to order a scope at the same time I order the rifle (Thompson Center Dimension). So which one should I get first Night vision scope (ATN 5x20 4K Pro) or High power long range scope (Vortex Golden Eagle 15 x 60 x 52) Cast you vote and opinion here.

Here is a link to the Vortex Golden Eagle: 15 x 60 x 52 Scope

Here is the link to the ATN 4K pro 5 x 20 Night Vision

I am still going to end up with both but I have to pick one to start with. So your vote will not cost me anything, but a few months waiting period but I really do want some hones prepper type feedack to balance my wants. Thanks for your help.

I say night vision scope. You likely have many rifles with day scopes. This way you get more training time with night scope first, while waiting to get day scope.

Very good sound logic. 1 point for the night vision. Thank you.

Well that is 3-zip for the Night vision. No long range shooters on board? I figured a few folks would be leaning towards the Golden Eagle. I will will and see how the score ends up.

I've got scopes for several of my rifles, although I prefer hunting with open sights. Eventually I'd like to get a night vision scope and binoculars with infared.

The ATN 4K Pro is the most affordable price point to feature Day / Night vision scope on the market to date. I do plan to get an infrared monocular to assist the Night vision scope. Critters can hide from Night Vision in the deep shadows but not from I.R. The NV has better visual definition to assist in identification of the critters. Monocular helps spot critter, NV helps identify critter and allow you to target the critter.

Are you a competitive shooter ? the Vortex is mainly a target/competition scope, not best choice for a hunting/fighting scope...not sure the Thompson rifle is really a long range precision rifle anyway....IMO a 5x20 or 6x24 scope would be better suited for the rifle...I used probably the best Thermal Weapon sights made while in Afghanistan and thermal is far better, but the good stuff is 5k or more, a lot of the sub 1k night vision stuff is only good for a couple hundred yards at most and clarity is not very good...being able to operate, see and shoot at night is going to be very expensive....

No I am not a competition shooter but I do want to be able to see and shoot out to or past 1,000 yards. Old guy eyes, if I can see it, then maybe I can hit it. I do not own the Dimension but have watched folks use it at 1,000 yards. It will do it's job if the shooter does their job. As for NV vs Thermal, no question the Thermal is better but as you pointed out, it is also in the 4 to 5K range. That is almost 2 years of my shooting budget, so not going to happen, at least in the foreseeable future. Who know I might win the lottery, if I bought a ticket.

Now from the two choices, which would select and for what reason?

Neither, depending on the round you will shoot the vortex may not have enough elevation travel to compensate for all the bullet drop if you shoot to a 1000.....the ATN products unless you go high end would not satisfy what I would want out of night vision....Sig Sauer makes a Thermal sight ( ECHO1 ) that would be worth a look and won't break the bank...

I looked up the sig and it is more of a Close combat 50 to 100 yard type scope on big targets. It does not have the precision or magnification to reach out longer distances. @x will not work for old guy eyes. The ATN listed scope is the top of their NV line. It has a 5 to 20 magnification, so I will be able to actually see the target verses just a shape. As for elevation, just as DrHenley pointed out, there are 20, 30, plus MOA bases for the Vortex. The question is not the elevation if is can I see the target. There are people hitting 1,000 targets with a 10x scope, I would not even see an outline of the target with that magnification. I follow the concept it is better to be able to aim at the shirt button vs. the shirt outline. Center mass is good, top button is better. Americn Sniper quote "Aim small, miss small".
