wasn't that the ship, sunk By jap sub and many of the sailors got eaten up sharks? or do I remember it wrong?

About 1100 men were on board, and less than 320 survived.

They weren't found and/or missed right away because they were sailing in secrecy under top secret security conditions...as they were delivering atom bomb components to Tinian Island.

They actually completed their mission, and were on their way back when they were torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.

I did not know it was never found till now, but knew the story well. It would take one heck of a resolute mind to not send off a mayday when you know your going down. I figure if they were seen already then what harm would a radio signal do?

There wasn't time to send a mayday.
The survivors of the USS Indianapolis estimate it took approximately 12 minutes for her to sink. The two Japanese torpedoes tore into her side, igniting an explosion that broke the ship in two. The ship dipped her bow, rolled to starboard and slip beneath the sea.

I remember the iconoc scene in the movie jaws where the captain tells the story about being on the ship that night. He said the mission was so secret that was why they didn't send the mayday call. I guess Hollywood isn't the best place to learn history from.....
