California problem for the most part is of it's own making, they were warned in the 50s this would happen and yet they pushed for further expansion, they were also warned in the 50s that these oasis's is not the norm! So in retrospect it's hard to feel sorry for the State and now its neighboring States are going to be punished for no other reason then the greed of cali !!

Its a common problem for some richer but arid states and nations such as Kalifornia, Spain and Portugal even though they are semi tropical arid regions they try to live and farm like folk from Temperate wetter regions and they totally abuse their precious water resources, then expect other regions to give them their water. I remember reading about Colorado and Kansas almost going to war over CO sucking so much water from the RED and Canadian rivers that they ran dry before they got into KS, Selfish, Stupid and Short sighted. Then places blessed with the Oghalla aquifer abuse that blessing by trying to suck it dry, My late dear friend John from KS told me that in the mid 70s the bore holes near him were only 30 meters down, now they are over 300.

It's desert. It's going to be dry. Some years are dryer than others. The biggest problem for the SW is too many people using what little water that is there. There are only so many rivers that can be damed and only so much snow melt to fill those rivers and aquifers.

Your right. Having spent time in a California desert during my military tour its an extremely arid environment. That said there is an old adage that you don't miss what you have got to till its gone......Does anyone know if they have considered pulling water from the Pacific Ocean? I know that would be an extremely expensive deal but it might be their only other option in the future.

I was in a third world country where they pulled water from the ocean, treated it and used it as drinking water though this country is probably not as big as California.

no doubt, desalinasation is the only option long term. I've read where environmentalists are fighting every step of it. Don't they know that is cutting their own throats by impeding the technology? I hope science is able to find a way to do economically and on a large scale. In the mean time, why would people waste water by planting thirsty lawns and ornamentals?

I think California has a desalination plant somewhere, can't remember now where it is. The problem with desalination plants is the cost of building and maintaining them, plus they can't produce the volume of water needed for such a large population. California created their own problems with insane growth, mass immigration and by trying to farm the desert. The quicker the "big one" hits and they fall in the ocean the better.

Dunno why they dont use that bloody great sunny desert to build solar powered evaporators to take the salt from sea water.
The cost. I don't know if Californians have anything left for the State to tax to pay the high cost. It's still cheaper to suck the aquifers dry and drain the lakes and rivers. For years California was talking about piping water from the Columbia River south. That could be just a pipe dream.

But if were lucky we wont have to worry about California and its problems. If they succeed from the union afterall. Lol. Then they could be on thier own. Although idk howd it work with their water situation and on the verge of bankruptcy. Id give em a week before they start trying to crawl back.
