i just had a thought on Desalinization plants. what if a person had their own Desalination plant? then they have 2 things going for them,if they plan it right.1st,is the water..and the 2nd is,the salt.now if a person had all 3. a Desalination plant, water and salt..then they have items for trade and barter..

Though desalinization requires lots of heat, Lewis and Clark done exactly that when they built Ft Clatsap in Oregon, they done it more for the salt then for water as a way to preserve meat but salt also become a trading item with the local Indians. Salt and water would be a valuable item in a post-shtf

here's a little something to how they went about it..

THE SALT WORKS

Seaside, Oregon
Source – The National Parks Service Website

On December 8, 1805 Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark established their winter quarters at Fort Clatsop. Here the Corps of Discovery lived in preparation for their long journey home.

"We having fixed on this situation as the one best calculated for our winter quarters," Clark wrote, "I determined to go as direct a course as I could to the seacoast..." His main purpose was to locate a route for a salt-making party.

Actually if you live some place sunny like California, Texas, Florida etc you can make a desalintor / evaporator / condenser out of glass and let the sun evaporate the water from the brine leaving the salt behind, the evaporate then condenses on the glass and runs own it to be collected and stored.

It's a pretty basic idea, and simple to desalinate salt water. It's the same process as distillation. The heat source can be electric, solar, or fire, but basically you just need to boil water, and collect the steam by mounting a dome over it, and collect the drips into a container. Not only is it going to desalinate, but also will purify contanimated water as well. I have several water filters, but this is probably my favorite way to make sure water is safe to drink. It leaves all impurities behind. I really liked an episode of doomsday preppers where a guy used a large magnifying glass to generate the heat to distill dirty pond water.
