i've noticed that there's a lot of talk about having different sources of transportation.be it cars,trucks,vans,motor cycles,bicycles,boats,airplanes etc etc..now lets say the shtf done happened,be it total economic collapse to total gov take over..and we're 5 years into it.now your short on spare parts,to dont have any at all when it comes to said transportation that you have.plus fuel is extremly hard to come by,if at all possible...now i ask..what are (YOU) gonna do for transportation? how are you gonna patrol the property while on security?how are you gonna go out and get meat for food and haul it home?what if we're hit with a EMP at the start of the shtf situation?is your bug out vehicle protected from that?is it quiet enough not to be heard from 1 tenth of a mile,so you can travel quietly and safely as possible?do you have a backup plan(s) for transportation?what if said transportation is broke down temporarily.how you gonna transport foods from the garden to the home if needed.how you gonna haul building materials for the home,barns and other structures?

Horses and cart, Like the old days. I always try and prep with that in mind. O and boats, merrily merrily modern life is but a dream....I hope the u.s.a has that song or your gona think I'm just nut's.

As always, I'll do the best I can with what I have. I don't have the ability right now to own draft animals so I'll use a bike or walk if I have to. I made plans to partner up with a local farmer who does, but hunting should not be your only way to gather meat, it is inefficient in a SHTF situation.

Think Jim had said 5yrs after shtf what would you do.....My only way of getting meat 5 yrs in would be to hunt or one of my farmer friends, How you gathering meat 5yrs in if huntings inefficient?

ok here's something to think about when it comes to putting meat on the table..horse and wagon.or,a horse and one of those things used to haul a injured person on.. plus.i hear sometimes if not most times its best to hunt far from where your located during the summer,.then you can hunt close by during the winter.

Thats such a good point on summer/winter hunting. I guess some folks would go a bit nomadic and just follow to the happy hunting grounds. In my area it pays to know the farmers and I do, I would hope to have miles of sheep,cows ect to get through before I had to think of hunting....Of course that would depend on what the shtf scenario was.

5 years of unregulated hunting, who's to say there'd be anything left. It does take a lot of time and there's no guarantee. I'm for hunting as a survival means but there are a lot of factors that have to be taken into consideration. domesticated meat is more efficient.

Know what you mean, If folks don't know how to hunt in a sustainable way then food would soon run out.

With diesel, you can actually make your own fuel from different sources. But, mostly we are going to ride the horses whenever we can. I think we'd save the fuel for when we actually need to haul something (or for the generators).

Some folks in Scotland use the old oil from the "chippy shops" (we deep fry everything) If you get caught you can get done for it.

Can be used, but there are some tricks to it (you have to start up with regular diesel in one tank, until the oil heats up, before switching to that tank, for example. Other fuels work too though, like alcohol and propane, etc.

And make sure you take the frys and old bits of fish out the oil...hehe!

I have the plans, vids, etc. saved for making a BioDiesel still, but can't put any money towards it anytime soon (as no immediate benefit, and that's just one of my parameters for preps). With most estimates, I'd only save about 10 cents a gallon, and that hardly justifies the startup expense or effort involved in making it myself currently. But, post SHTF, different story. THEN it would be worth scrounging the parts, materials together to do it.

Do you have red diesel in the USA? I've heard somefolks in the UK talking about it, I think the farmers use it and it's cheaper for them to buy. It's illegal for just anyone to use it tho.

Basically, it's just home heating oil. It is cheaper, and not too different from automotive diesel. It's called "red" diesel because they add the dye. Using it skirts the fuel tax laws though, so it's illegal for that reason. No real need for heating oil here in FL, so not an option for me anyhow, hehe. It is cheaper per gallon though, so farmers in colder areas....I totally get it. No doubt they are putting it in their tractors, maybe even trucks.

I was under the impression it was regular diesel, but not quite as clean. The red dye is added so they can see if you're trying to get around the tax discounts on it, as it's only allowed for farm use.

The army also use it here, It's handy for folks with friends in the army or that have farmer friends....I would think.

I'll have to use my donkeys. . . don't have any horses and donkeys are less of an up keep. But have to agree, go back to the good ole days and the ways they did things.

I love donkeys, I don't have one but a near by farm has one and he's such a sook and so funny.
