I usually tell people to keep prepping simple. Think about what you need to live. Water, food, shelter, security. These are listed in order of importance. Start with those basics and think about how you can improve your ability to make sure you have each of these. There are many things you can do in addition to these, but make sure the basics are covered first.

First, engage YOUR brain. Your own common sense will guide you thru a lot if you just use it. Don't listen to the news for how to react, use your OWN brain. You are on the site which proves you are smarter than the average "snowflake". You are thinking and attempting to plan ahead. If something does not make sense, there is probably a reason so go with your instinct. AND above all, question everything out of DC. Common Sense left that city a long time ago.

Nestle had a sale on 5 gallon jugs of water for 5 bucks. I bought 38 5 gallon jugs stashed through out the house. I’m thinking of doubling that since we live a big city. Wife and I both drink about half gallon a day. Daughter is around that too. Water filters and a couple of gallons in each car with back packs and walking hiking shoes. I also have a dehumidifier and a gennie big enough to run it. Four cars filled up at all times with 90 gallons of gas between them with siphons. Canned foods for two years. Lastly need lots of plywood to board up first story windows. Three high capacity high powered guns. Ammo isn’t the best but slowly stocking up on ammo as the lib city I live in is making it hard to buy. Having my dad ship ammo from the Midwest. I try to do something every day. We have a bug out location in the high sierras but need to buy land to make it permanent. We’re blessed with a budget that can afford to do it right.

food, water, shelter, security, first aid.
food: "store what you eat, eat what you store", don't be tempted to buy something just because its on offer or cheap, chances are it'll get left at the back of the shelf, and "rotate, rotate, rotate" first in first out principle.
water: either get some proper water containers or get some of the water bottles in packs in the supermarket, keep in a clean, dry place out of direct sunlight. you need a minimum of half a gallon per person per day.
Shelter: that's normally the place you live.
Security: even if you don't or cant buy some sort of firearm, make sure all windows and doors have good quality locks fitted, fit door bolts to all exterior doors, several to each.
First Aid: get a good quality first aid kit and know how to use it, take a first aid course if you can.

And stock upon any prescription medicines you need.
