The light would be indoors in the fireplace, or within the grills.
Not much chance of that being seen from anywhere (and FL is pretty flat).
The smoke is the kicker...

Traveling? Like another said, the old Dakota fire pit solution.

No doubt, it's a security risk, but the warmth and a hot meal can go a long way for moral. Picking your spot carefully can help add safety. I think some barrier, either put up, or inside some building, to shield the light would be smart. I'm ok with the risk of the smoke and smell after dark, espechially if your off the beaten path.

Post SHTF, it would have to be a pretty bright moon to spot smoke at night. I think most folks don't have any idea of what true darkness at night is, as there is usually some kind of artificial light around.

We did night paintball before, (was at a MOUT training facility), where we were in the woods, and an enemy team patrol was scouting the perimeter of the lit up "town". (so they were between us and the town, silhouetted against it). My buddy and I couldn't even see each other and we were 3 feet away. The enemy was about 20' away. He and I took out all 6 members of the patrol in a heartbeat, even though we were standing in the open. Was just too dark to see us. That simple.

had that reserve meeting yesterday, the level my hometown is prepped,I'll just use the word of one of the lecturers; we are in a big pile of doo-doo with civil defence, just gives more weight and importance to my own preps..just feel a little sorry for the kids if something goes sour...
