Begging is a new carreer , I work at a place where we see it every day . Lots come in from the interstate , some come from a commune we call hippie hill , even one from India saying she was a refugee . Our customers ask us to remove them and I will make sure they are out of our parknig lot . I did tell one of the hippies that wanted to get pushey and asked me " where do you want me to stand ?) I said out in the Highway or any where you want as long as its not on this property .

Maverick, I believe you're right. So many people will stalk the wildlife that they will be depleated quickly. I'm thinking if things get really bad and I have to get out I'll relocate to the ocean. When the fish trollers stop raping the oceans we'll once again be able to harvest from the beaches because the fish will come back. As a child on the California coast I remember always being able to cast out a line and bring in good sized perch or whatever. Could do it all day.
One more thought, what's going to happen to all those oil rigs sitting out there when men stop tending them? Do they have an automatic shut off that won't fail over time? Scarey thought.

there's so many hunters well within walking distance of where i live..i'll be extremely surprised if there'll be any wildlife left after 1 month of a shtf situation..not to mention how dangerous it'll be to go out any where at that time..

At work yesterday an attractive woman walked in with a baby in a carrier hooked on her arm. She went into a long elaborate story how she was trying to get back home but had no gas left in her car. I actually had no cash on me, so was no help. She went thru the building for probably 20 minutes, and I noticed her again when she left. I did notice she got into a new Nissan. I hope she really was just in a pinch, because using a baby to help your profits from begging is pretty low.
I hear sob stories every day too. Most are just scams. Its very hard to tell when someone really needs the help, or are just trying to scam you. My policy is that I'll only help out family or friends who I know actually need the help and the money wont be wasted. There are too many beggars and scammers out there today, so I just say NO.

There are several people that I have helped . But I will not be a enable'er that lets someone get away with living the life that got them to that point to start with . These professional beggars that I mentioned above will turn around and buy beer cig's and dvd's while holding up a sign asking for $ to feed their children . I have helped some adicts that are trying to get straight but not when they are using . Thats somthing I know a bit about , I can relate to Machine Gun Preacher ..... Been there , done that threw away the Tshirt .

After reading One Second After and Lights Out, I've been wondering how I'd handle visitors from inside and outside the neighborhood who come to everyone's door with outstretched hands after a grid down situation.

I'd have no problem turning away able-bodied adults and backing it up with my 870 if need be. And I know that once you give a can of food to even a family of good, deserving people, either that family will be back every day thereafter, or worse yet, word is going to get around you have more. Remember the American Blackout youtube movie? Still, I can't stand to see hungry kids.

We're very close with two or three neighbors and would be happy to share with them. Problem is, none of them are preppers. I think they know I am because of old Y2K preps and that I'm the only one on the block with a generator.

Maybe I just tell everyone we got nothing. Or maybe I display a small decoy stash of food, so that's all anyone thinks we have.

It might be different if we lived in a protected community with other like-minded, armed families where we could afford to give an occasional gift of charity food or water, but we're one family in the suburbs, and not likely to bug out.

Anybody ever given this some thought? What did you come up with?

We had a similar discussion a year or so ago here. I haven't really changed my stance on helping the unprepared in a post-shtf (except I may have harden my stance) and that would be no I wouldn't even if it was a mom and child. My whole prepping goal is making sure my Wife's needs are met and her security, I didn't prep to take care of outsiders and strays period, granted that's cold-hearted though as I have said many times over, my Wife is my only priority, if that means I am selfish then so be it.

Our governor just declared a state of emergency for the whole state (drought) very unusual here, now, given the possibility of limited water in a post-shtf, no I'm not going to take on more bodies regardless what they may offer, I know my limitations and I won't deviate from my long term plan pre/post-shtf.

This is the discussion we had couple years ago someone brought it back out .
My stance is case by case base . Who are they , what do they need , what do I have to spare . Situations may not be the same for each case .

I agree with you completely. My family comes first. In my work and travels around the world, mostly in third world countries, I have seen every kind of sad case imaginable. At first I started helping some of the people whenever I could, but I soon realized that you can't save the world. In the US, most of the sad sacks put themselves in their own predicament. In a SHTF scenario, my only concern is taking care of my family first and only.

I like what you said about some in this country putting themselves in their own predicament. Here, even the poorest are rich compared to lots of places in the world. There are so many opportunities here to get back on your feet. There are some that truly can't help themselves, like wounded vets, other medical issues etc. those I'm fine with. The ones that are healthy and begging, bullshit.

I'm likely to consider what they could offer as well. Top survive post shtf, we are all going to need a group to make it. I'm pretty self reliant, in today's situation, but am smart enough to know you can't fight a mob alone, or run a farm without labor, etc. I have no intentions of starting a welfare state again though.

I have softened my stance on groups lately, but not strangers, I always say "stranger=danger!!" and we should be very cautious of anyone we don't know in a post SHTF environment. I believe that eventually some form of " community" will evolve, its inevitable given humans instinct for herding together, but I feel also it will be a long time down the road, after the dust settles, before this will happen.

take it from me....as long as you are willing to give there will be someone willing to take.ive spent my life giving to the point of completely everything I own, started over, done it again and again. God has always returned me into a very blessed position. It is almost like some kind of cleansing to get rid of stuff . Well....my dad used to always tell people who needed me to build stuff, when they asked was I capable, he can make anything on earth...except a living...guess he was right

I can see a lot of people in the UK, when SHTF holding out their hands EXPECTING to be fed....food banks are a growth industry in this country......its called the "welfare mentality", and many depend on it from "cradle to grave"......I think they just might be in for a shock when a dose of REALITY hits home.

i use to do whatever i can to help someone in need.which includes money..now i ask, where will get the money needed to pay my bills if i give you money?pluss i limit myself to what i will do to help someone now.if i see someone stranded on the side of the road, and if it looks like they could use some help.i'll stop.i aired up a tire on a suburban for a woman one day.simply because i stooped to help.and someone else gave it a jump start just before i stopped...but yet..a person that i dont know, will be right lucky to get the time of day from me after tshtf happens..

I was a dip sh-t recently and left my lights on, and had a dead battery when I went to start the car. Some guy stopped and helped me push the car, and jumped it off for me. Since then I have jumped two other cars, and was glad I could help. There's nothing wrong with helping others, I just have no desire to support anyone who dosent want to work to support themselves.

Helping someone thats in a bind is not enabeling them to be a sponge . I helped folks when I know what I do for them will help but Im not going to help someone be a burden to others .
Post SHTF I will continue the same policy but use more discretion .

hadnt even thought about folks smelling the food after tshtf..

Smell is a pretty limited distance...smoke from the fire on the otherhand......
Why we intend to cook mostly at night. Much harder to trace back then. (and post SHTF, the world will be a VERY dark place at night). Survivors aren't likely to be wandering about at night, post SHTF. Simply can't see where you are going without completely giving up your position.....which presumably, you want to hide, or wouldn't be traveling at night!

dakota pits would hide the light! also, burning hardwood would give off less smoke and scent such as madrone, live oak, eucalyptus, walnut, black oak etc... softwood like pine would make it smell like christmas then add fir the smell and smoke will linger for quite a while at considerable distance, I use fatwood to start my hardwood fires, so, know your wood if you want to keep the smoke down (2 to 3yr old seasoned hardwood is best) and learn the various methods of fire pits ;)

FYI, if your seasoning the wood, don't cover it with a tarp!
