Rules of engagement? As a prepper and a survivalist, my focus is on staying alive. Not to come across as cowardly, but I wonder if a lot of people have romantic ideas about guerrilla warfare from movies like Rambo, Red Dawn, Commando, etc..

I'm fifty years old, I have steel plates, screws, and rods in my spine, and I can't really run like I used to.

I have plenty of guns, ammo, spare parts for guns, and gunsmithy tools...but I have no intention of becoming a partisian after SHTF.

I'm only concerned with self-defense, and much of my stockpile is intended for barter to secure materials and things that I didn't have the insight to store.

I've also stockpiled enough rice and beans to donate and give to my neighbors for goodwill purposes.

Yes. Discretion.

I have a suspicion that the relationship between movie guerilla warfare (think 'Rambo') and real guerrilla warfare is as distorted as the relationship between movie police procedure and real police procedure, or movie surgery and real surgery.

I think that anyone who tries any of that movie garbage post SHTF will get thinned out very quickly.

I, for one, plan on helping my neighbors as much as I can with as much charity as I can realistically provide in order to cement loyalty and a sense of community.

Anyone in the military, police, healthcare, etc. will tell you that teamwork is always the foundation for success and survival.

I think the 'lone wolf' commando/survivalist stereotype is a Hollywood invention.

I'm afraid so, I have touched on this several times, we have a lot of kids out there that purchased themselves a new black rifle's all fancied up with the latest and greatest furniture's and gadgetry with 10k rounds of ammo would love nothing better than to fight on the streets or survive out in the back country. Most people preaching civil war are not Combat Vets nor ever been part of asymmetrical warfare nor have they ever survived off the land. Me on the other hand will stay where I am or if need be slip up in the back country away from these fools. No Kevin, you're not coming across cowardly at all, in fact it's smart thinking

Much of the prepper groups around my parts are prepping for or talking about armed confrontations, those groups I will not join. I can still do a lot of things and carry my load (abit slower) though I realize I'm not 22 years old anymore. My duties today is to my family and my family alone thus safety/survival is paramount. Many of these youngsters romanticizing a civil war/guerilla warfare etc... really have NO clue what war is and be damned if they try to involve me in this horseshit and I don't care what side of the fence they may be on. I'm not going to fight Americans on American soil and that's a g'damn fact! I told a fella in a local preppers group a year or so ago, 'wrong or right' keep the shit away from my family and my property and we will get along just fine otherwise the consequences will be painful'

I think it depends on where you live. In areas where the resources (food water etc.) are not sufficient to sustain the population, people are going realize that it's dog eat dog, and they will quickly realize that they will need to live by the law of the jungle.

In other areas (like where my BOL is located) where there are ample resources and a small population density, there is no reason for anyone to starve or die of thirst, or even die of exposure. By cooperation everyone can survive. In those areas you have a much better chance of having a stable and reasonably safe community evolve. There will be some violence as the freeloaders realize the government gravy train has derailed and try to take things by force, but they will have a very limited life span...nearly everyone is armed already, and there are probably two or three times more guns than people, so in short order EVERYONE will be armed.

I too have met many 'preppers' that almost seem to want the world to fall apart. They seem to have this romantic notion of living off the land and being happy and free. In the real world, survival would be tough. I personally really like the modern world with all the luxuries it affords. Cars beat the hell out of horse and buggies. Having a doctor to go to, or take your sick child to, is a great thing. We take so much that we have for granted in life. I for one, really hope to never need any of the things I've worked on with prepping for survival.

Reality will be a BITCH for them then. And all this cosmic fear bullshit running rampant over the web is not helping any....

for many people living without mains electric, mobile phones and the internet will be hard if not impossible.
those of us who were brought up in a different age and a different time have already experienced such so it wont come as that much of a surprise. me personally, I find the modern world too complicated and yearn for a simpler if harder time.

A good thread this is chaps, good and interesting valid opinions, keep it up.
I like the trappings of modern society but I try to view them as luxuries so I plan to still function without them. But it doesnt mean I dont want them.

As for the wonderful US of A and its second amendment, whilst the right to keep and bare arms is a very good thing I honestly believe their is going to be a shitfest of uncontrolled violence when TSHTF as various individuals (1) settle scores (2) try to take what they want (3) try to keep what is theirs (4) try to take from others (5) try to move onto someone elses property etc etc. I still say the 12 year old kid with his Little Chiappa 22LR single shot hiding in the grass near his home only has to be lucky once. whilst the black rifle equipped predator who trespasses will find himself out of luck.

Basically ( both sides of the pond) there are quite simply to many AHs who think they are SAS SBS SFRG Seals, Rangers, Delta, Recon etc who think Have Gun Will Travel

From Stalingrad to Berlin, Belfast and Londonderry, to the Mekong Delta to Bosnia tp Mogadishu those who were defending familiar home ground even with very limited weaponry had the advantage and it takes strong professional organised full on military effort to overwhelm them NOT so dude with tarted up SUX and a Black Carbine clone.

I put my money on those who plan on laying low being totally familiar with the local geography who take the sensible preps to protect their homes, but with the brains to also have plans that include and ORGANISED Bug out if required are the ones who will survive and thrive.
