here's a idea i came across elsewhere.helmets shoulder/elbow/knee pads..these things could protect you from flying debris,at least up to a point..right along with any part(s) of the home/business/school or wherever it is,that you be at,at the time.so having a tornado box,in the basement/closet or where your safe location is.could prove to be a good idea.and having other itmes there could be a good idea, just in case your traped.like bottles of water, energy bars and other food items that dont take up to much space, hand crank radio(s),one or more types of communication radios.like hand held cb radio.bull horn to get the attion of anyone thats close by..and if there's enough space for this.a pvc frame and tarps, for a camp potty, and the needed stuff for keeping the smell down..

Whatever shelter you're in, if it takes a direct hit from a tornado of any size, the air inside will almost certainly become very dusty. Good idea to make sure you have something to cover your face to make it easier to breathe. Dust mask, bandanna or even a damp rag will help filter the air for a few critical minutes until the dust settles out. Don't forget to have a flashlight or two on hand & ready.

I think the only thing that would work is something like on that one Bond movie, where it formed a big inflatable ball around him.

upload_2016-4-17_19-22-45.png I have these stored down in our larger shelter, along with my battle ready Kevlar helmets. They are pretty cheap and do the trick for natural disasters or riding in my 4x4, in my opinion a better product than a bike helmet and provide the proper form fitting on any adult head. This is the Raptor model and sells for about $25 on Amazon. The newer model is called Tactical Crusader Lightweight Tactical Helmet and runs about $33. The raptor has a tactical rail mount, that you can mount a tactical light.

I think a helmet is one of the best pieces of protective gear to consider. Head injuries from a fall or debris are the first thing that can easily kill you. Pillows or cushions of any kind covering the rest of your body is good, and if not handy, any sort of barrier to protect you from flying debris like under a coffee table, or just about anything that can absorbe or deflect it. I only hope none of us is ever in the direct path of one.

What is not very costly and can even be bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond or even I think SAM's or Walmart...are bed toppers. We got them for the kids for college, but I made sure that they knew that they needed to pull it off the bed, in case of a tornado. I was talking to a person who survived the Moore tornado in 2015, her daughter and son jumped into the tub and they pulled the topper into the bathroom. Both left unscathed, even though a good part of the home was literally gone.

Yes, I can't preach enough about head protection. I know some people are saying head protection when you go 4 wheeling is for just sissy's, really if you take a wrong turn fast or tip over, these helmets are life savers. I don't think I've ever seen pro drivers or those on shows like Top Gear, go without them. So these are great little things to have near your bed. Worse, you don't have time to get to the inner corridor, these things are a must. I even have one in my desk.
