Although I currently have propane for cooking and backup heat, I'm gearing up for wood to be more independent, and in case of SHTF. We saw a propane "shortage" a couple winters ago and propane went up to $6.00 per gallon. I'll never be held hostage to any utility company or be gouged with those kind of prices again. We own several hundred acres of timber, and are totally surrounded by public domain land, so wood won't be a problem (plus its free).
I do most of my heating with the fireplace now, but really wish I had done a wood burning stove instead. They are a lot more efficient, using much less wood and you can cook on them as well. So far I have electric and the fireplace, I just wanted a third option, being a gas space heater. I like backups for my backup.

Had a 4yr old 500gal propane tank given to me yesterday, 80 miles away plus a $200 flat bed rental with boom to haul the tank, $200 not a bad price for a 500 gal tank
For that kind of money you'd be nuts not to buy it. Even if you don't have propane, you could sell it for a profit. I think prepping with it makes more sense though.

--- Like the video maker , I also consider my radiation detector that I keep inside my faraday cage the most want to protect item that I have . At this point in time it is an almost certainty that either we will experience an Electrical Magnetic Pulse Attack or an Coronal Mass Ejection of an intensity never experienced in our lifetimes . --- Another thought I will mention , though it may make some angry that plan to travel after such an event . Gas station fuel pumps are hard wired into the electrical grid , therefore they very likely will be fried and non-operational for many months and likely years . However this fact is basically mute as there will not be any electricity for the station , therefore will be closed . --- For those that think they will be able to steal fuel from the stations tanks with some kind of private pump , think again . I am " the guy " a college in my chosen survival state , took up a collection and sent into the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on a rescue mission . For hundreds of miles along the road sat vehicles out of fuel like in an apoplectic movie . At the gas stations sat lines of vehicles waiting at the closed gas stations that stretched for miles . The stations were closed and inside them were armed guards to prevent anyone from stealing from those holding tanks .

Leasing the tank seems to be the way to go, if you're ok with an above ground install. Much cheaper to do a yearly lease fee than buy one outright, plus they service it. (and of course, it's already there if the SHTF, so not like they will come and get back). This would dramatically reduce the cost outlay (especially as it will take a lot of $ to actually fill the tank too). I'm really liking this paired with a propane generator though. And in short term issues (like power outages, etc.), having the full power capability (and with seamless transition) throughout the house is simply too cool for words.

Granted, post SHTF, we'd enact some strict power usage rules, to stretch the supply out.
Warning - some propane companies " DOUBLE " the price of per gallon of propane for a rental tank . Also by contract the person renting the tank " has to buy from the company from which they are renting the tank . Rental tanks are usually color coded so as another company will recognize it as a rental tank and are forbidden to fill it . --- On another matter about large propane tanks , The former Communist running the United States " Hussain Obama " after seeing the Joe Bidden puppet put lording over the peasants went and bought several " huge " propane tanks and filled them , hooking them to his Martha's Vinyard home . Hussain knew what was about to happen .

when things get bad enough, those stations will be abandoned give it time
