We're used to the Florida panthers being endangered here.

Im a dedicated Hunter and 100 % for Hunting and ing sports . But a Hunter should know when to shoot and when to pass . I even let Rabbits go these days because they are pressured by coyotes here . Anyone shooting endangered wildlife that is not threatening someone should receive a harsh penalty .
I do think there is a population of Jaguar making a comeback in the U.S . Just like Cougars have been confirmed on trail cams here in TN .

I thought they (dogooders) killed last remaining Panther in Florida when they tried relocating it on a game reserve?

I think the low point was in the 1970s when there were only 20 left in the wild. They number in the hundreds now.

I was just reading on the Florida Panther, what I was reading several years ago apparently wasn't on the Florida cat. The story I was reading was on the Black Panther in fact I don't think it was a North America story... oh my brain

Probably the Eastern Cougar, which has now been declared extinct. They were removed from the Endangered Species List in February of this year (2018). All cougars except Florida Panthers found East of the Mississippi are now considered either wild Western Cougars that have strayed across the river, or escaped captive cougars.

The Western Cougar is expanding its range East.

They are both Felidae but the saber tooth cat came from Machairodontinae, a different sub group than that of the Jaguar

I think I got that from a Nat G documentary. Comparing tha hunting and killing style and choice of prey . Often biting through the skull .

My understanding the Jag sub family is Pantherinae under Felidae whereas the saber tooth sub famly Machairodontinae under Felidae with the only commonality being the family of Felidae.
