In this study a morbidly obese 27-year-old, weighing in at 456 pounds fasted for 382 days (one year and 17 days) and lost 275.5 pounds.

He was obviously monitored and given vitamin tablets as well as water but no food.

So fat people may have upper hand lmfao.

In all seriousness though based on this information Im curious about a couple things.

Im wondering around what percentage of vitamins are absorbed by ur body if taken without food.

I'm also curious as to how much beyond expiration dates are vitamins still good for. It would appear that most vitamins don't have very long shelf life.

i was always under the impression that if a human went without food for any length of time our stomach would start "consuming" itself starting with any muscle. obviously this individual was under supervision but going without food for a year and pooing only every 40-50 days seems extreme to say the least. what they don't tell you is the layers of excess skin you are left with after these extreme diets!!

382 does sound beyond extreme even for an obese person even with vitamins? vitamins are only supplement not replenishment, without normal food his digestive system would cease to function along with bowel muscles, I'm kindly at a loss with the article. I say kudos to the gentleman, that's a hell of way to lose weight and chancy.

Vitamins will last 4 to 5 years past expiration if stored in dark cool place in a SHTF situation (non-liquids), in normal times 2 years past is the date, similar to most antibiotics.

does sound a bit suspect, a year without food? I don't think this is possible without medical intervention, a drip into the stomach say! I have heard of some IRA prisoners going on hunger strike but I think most either gave up or died within a few months, (Bobby Sands died after 66 days on hunger strike) obviously not moving about, not exerting ones self does delay the inevitable a bit but its only a delaying tactic at best.
we all need food(and water) to live.

I was looking up people in a year long coma, they were on a continued drip IVs to feed them in what is called a "Total Parenteral Nutrition" but that's in a total controlled environment.

"Home TPN formula. Parenteral nutrition (PN) is the feeding of a person intravenously, bypassing the usual process of eating and digestion. The person receives nutritional formulae that contain nutrients such as glucose, salts, amino acids, lipids and added vitamins and dietary minerals"

This was done in a controlled environment. It's just interesting to see how long human body can endure.

I think most people are unaware how long they can go without food. Starving to death would be long and excruciating.

Water depletion on the other hand is an entirely different problem. Everyone's body has different tolerances. Appreciate info on vitamins.

we need to eat to live, anyone who thinks differently is an idiot. food is the bodies fuel.
we can go for 3 weeks to a month without food, some have gone for a couple of months without food, but within a very short time frame we would be weak, lethargic and unable to do very much.
a test was done in the British Army to see how long someone could go without food before they became unable to carry out simple tasks, the average time was 12 DAYS, and this was fit young squaddies.

I don't think anyone here is planning on going hungry. Simple fact that studies indicate the human body can withstand far more than most realize.

maybe if one is sitting on ones backside doing nothing, but it only delays the inevitable.
if we are doing tasks of work we need fuel in our bodies and that comes in the form of food.
go without food and work becomes harder and harder until it becomes impossible, then you die.
mind you, I don't think anyone in the western world knows what hunger is, when they say "i'm hungry" what they mean is "i'm peckish" they don't know what real hunger is.

Im not disputing this Paulie.

The hospital (University of Dundee Medical School in Scotland) fed him yeast for 10 months, so it wasn't a strict fast the whole time.

This happened in 1965 BTW...
1965?? a bit old news then?:p I don't think he'd have lasted very long if it wasn't under hospital supervision.
like I said earlier, Bobby Sands the IRA prisoner died in an Irish prison 66 days after starting a hunger strike and I think he was a fit 27 year old to start with not a morbidly obese patient.

During ww2 many prisoners of war lasted extremely long periods of time with little to no food and minimum amounts water.

I just wonder in such a setting what ur true minimum intake should be.

I know for me personally I don't always consume the recommended dosage of water per day. Not because I don't have access to water but because I simply dont feel the need to. Others around me seem to be consuming far larger amounts of water. Everyone's body has different requirements.

Speaking of hunger strikes...

Yale Graduate Students formed a labor union called "Local 33" and since the University didn't recognize them as a legitimate labor union, they are going on a "hunger strike" until the University recognizes them. Their gripe with the university is that their $30,000 a year stipend, free tuition, and free health care aren't good enough and they want more...

Whenever one of them gets hungry they will be replaced by another student.
