So I decided to go down stairs and take inventory of our canned goods and spices from the garden so we would know what to plant, in the process I also took inventory of non-rotational stock (our emergency fall back supplemental stock [garden failures, unable to access stores]) I had more than I thought but also less on some needed items. Figured I'll throw a partial list out here of the #10 cans of various brands (long term storage) Augason Farms, Emergency Essential, Wise and Mountain House. Maybe the list will give someone some ideas? For the new folks just starting out, this is not a year supply of food these are only supplements to what we would grow (or can't) raise and hunt/fish/forage.

That's a great list. I've decided I'm going to start collecting some of the bags of dehydrated meals here. I like the lightweight aspect if I ever have to bug out. I really don't have much in the way of non rotational, but if one can afford the extra it makes sense. Have you eaten much of the stuff, and if so what was your favorite?

The vegetables, fruits and dairy are great, the banana slices are my favorites. Almost everything on the list is for making stuff from scratch like bread, cornbread, crackers, peanut butter etc.. others is for making beans and rice etc... I have had no problems with any of it, I know the girls have robbed stuff from the stock like a can of peaches and flour to make peach cobbler. The Wife ordered 6 cans of corn with butter and salt added (everyone I talked to loves it) but 4 were dented on the seam, I called them up and they are sending replacements, I don't mind miner dents in the center of the can but I don't take chances with dents on the seam, just have a good can opener or several.

What is the rated shelf life on the cans, 25yrs?

The freeze dried in pouches is great, I have 10 months worth for a family of four. We have tried most of the variety of what we have and we are satisfied with it all. We also have a 1 year supply of rotational canned foods and 3 years of beans, grains, legumes. a 10 year supply of Salt, oils, suger, spices, viniger, honey, etc... I find its best to eat from your 25 year freeze dried Food about once a month and replace it so you can order more of what you liked best. try everything at least once.

I don't mind freeze dried/dehydrated foods but I would hate to make it my primary source of food, one of the pit-falls is the astronomical amount of required water. Thankfully I have good wells, creeks and lots of rain, I know Augason Farms 3-day for 4 people emergency food buckets require 12-gal of water per bucket just for the food, for 2 people for one month requires 72-gal of water just for the food and for a year 864-gallons and to put it in perspective that's 16 55-gallon blue barrels providing it's topped off, in my case I can put in only 50 gallons to allow for freeze expansion. That's something the new folks to prepping need to consider when purchasing these types of foods.
