New to prepping from Houston

Hi. I am new to prepping. I have been reading disaster books of all kinds and trying to be prepared. I say trying because I just turned 17 and I don't really have that much money to work with just some cash from a part time job. Also my family isn't in to prepping and I'm trying to be keeping it under the cover cause I don't want them to think I am crazy. So if you guys have any tips for some cheap prepping I would really appreciate it.

There are all kinds of things we could give you tips on, but we'll need more info on what you've already done or have in mind. For instance, do you have a few jugs of water put back?

I have water stocked up and I'm planning on getting some MRE's and some canned goods. I work at HEB so I get a discount on the canned goods and other stuff you can get from a store.I have an Ar-15 with about 1000 rounds and a .22 rifle with almost 500 rounds (I know I need more ammo but it's expensive). I would build a a BOB but I have nowhere to Bug out to. I've been to the range but not really experienced with guns(My Dad is more experienced with them he had a couple of rifles and Pistols before we moved) I moved back from overseas 2 years ago and I've only been to the range a couple of times. If you guys have any tips about what to do to improve I would appreciate it.

start to "build up your knowledge", like map reading,how to make fire,first aid,it's those small things that you do,those are the building blocks.

A BOB is still a pretty good first step. Maybe not necessarily for getting somewhere, but at least for having things nearby at hand.

Of course, you're already doing great with those weapons, though man, a $1000 gun as a teen? Somebody really likes you!

Skills cost no money though...and that is more important than "stuff". Besides, you can always find stuff....but the skill to use it....much different story.

Most of us here, are not the "I'm going to go off in the woods and be Rambo" types. We're more into sustainable living....having a steady supply of food and water, that kind of thing.

Are your parents onboard? If not, maybe you can use it as an outgrowth of hurricane or tornado prep?

I saved up about half and split the rest with my brother. He also bought the ammo but I keep the gun while he is at University.
