I am thinking of buying land in the near future down in Tennessee and building a small house on the land. What I was thinking is that I would install a solar system and rain collection system as a back up power and water supply incase SHTF.

My question is what else do you think I should do? Note I have not bought any land yet since this idea of moving to Tennessee is still in the early stages.

First thing is can you do this now? If you can, I wouldn't wait, just in case SHTF, it already has. Otherwise I would stay where you are.

If you move now, plan for self sustaining and off grid options.

Would be beneficial if

(1) the is water at an economical drilling level drill for a well.
(2) the soil was suitable to raise crops
(3) if a flowing stream or creek enough of a drop for smally hydro lectric
and / or
(4) Windy enough for micro wind turbines
(5) Sufficient lumber on your land for fuel

Well I have been looking at things like that. I plan on having solar be the primary back up with things set up to add wind as a secondary. I also plan on having a hidden basement where I will keep all my supplies.

What ever you think all this will cost, triple it. If you can find it, I'd suggest that you get a place that borders public domain land (example National Forest). And most importantly find a place as far off main roads and as far away from people as possible.
Been trying to do that but the properties I have looked at are too big, too small, or too expensive for me to do that. So I have to compromise where I live. I may be a single guy but my job doesn’t pay enough for me to be able to one of your suggested. I can at try the part about staying far enough of the road.

Just a little warning regarding SOLAR. DO NOT fall for the packages offered by most solar companies. Most are GRID tied and show how cheap it is based upon selling back to the power company. There are a lot of pit-falls in those contracts. If you go solar, create a separate off grid system that is not way tied into you grid system. May be a little more expensive with running addition wiring it the house but in the end, you do not have to worry about the power company trying to tell you what to do.

I should have given a complete list of what I was thinking for the property.

1) The house is possibly going to be a 12x24 loft barn cabin since I am single and don’t need a lot of space.

2) Solar system with possible hookups for wind to be added if needed

3) Rain collection system (tank size tbd)

4) Hidden large crawl space or Michigan basement for solar system batteries and storage of preps.

5) Some kind of property security system (still in the debate on that or at debating design of it)

You might not need a load of living space but you will need a decent space for storing things like food and fuel. Work out what type of energy you use and how much. It may be you don't need so much electricity as you think if you are using lots of wood for heating.

Been thinking/looking into both storage and power.

Seems like a lot of work and calculation from building from ground up. Not only you need to plan safety measures from seasonal weather’s, you would also need to plan sustainability. Don’t you want to buy a ready built house or cabin then equate how much power and water source you or your family need for a year or two (assuming your expanding)? There are always unforeseen challenges or variables when moving to a new place before mapping a prepping guidelines. Just saying ‍.
