OR research it yourself if you don't like clicking links.

Lactuca Virosa is the scientific term for it, and many people have used it in place of addictive prescription pain medicine. It’s a leafy and tall plant, with small yellow buds, and could be grown right out your door. Morecommonly found in North America and England, it’s a cousin to the lettuce we typically see at the grocery store. It’s also referred to as bitter lettuce, or more appropriately for the purpose discussed here, opium lettuce.

Interesting. I don't smoke pot, but if shtf I would start growing it asap. I know enough people to easily get seeds from if ever needed. Could you imagine having a tooth pulled without any anesthesia? At least with moonshine and pot, and maybe this bitter lettuce stuff you would suffer less with stitches and such.

That's going to be a major issue post SHTF regarding bad teeth and gum infection, sepsis was a big factor regarding infection in the mouth. Without modern medical science or tools, we are going to have to deal with it pre 1840s (when nitrous oxide first use as an anesthetic) and that is pulling teeth the old old fashion way pain and all.

Thank you for the information.

I plan to obtain bitter lettuce seeds and start cultivating it.

I will follow up in this forum about the details of growing and--of course--using it, with myself as a lab rat. I will be cautious.

After reading up, I don't think it will show up in a drug test.

Thank you again for the info.

Don't forget things like willow bark for aspirin, using cloves for a toothache, vinegar is good for lots of stuff including cleaning, learn to make vinegar, garlic is a natural antibacterial, lots of herbs that can be grown are good for all sorts of things. Learning what is good and what is safe is important. Also what interactions different people may have. John might not be affected but Mary might. Know how to counteract these problems. Having a good herbalist in the group would help out a lot.

I go to the dentist every 6 months and get any cavities fixed, I've only got 7 teeth left so dosent take long! at least if I start of when SHTF with teeth with no problems that one less thing I've got to worry about.

took this long for me to check this out, seems like there has been one place here in my neck of woods where this plant was spotted
and that observation dates back to 1949...

You can always get opium poppy seeds. They don't seem to be hard to come by.

Opium seeds must be of the right strain (or cultivar) in order to grow opium.

Also, the right environmental conditions must be met. High altitude, cool (but not freezing) nights, lots of sunshine, and so on.

Also, it takes a lot of poppies to make a reasonable amout of opium...I would guess that two or three acres is reasonable.

It would really suck to get addicted, and then run out!

Kevin, that hasn't been my experience. They grow just fine in Minnesota and Wisconsin. You can't readily tell them from any other poppy. One pod can be scraped twice, and get maybe a quarter teaspoon of sap. Then you just roll it in a ball and eat it. I guess maybe we are differing on what a reasonable amount is. It does have to be the right type of poppy, and you can't tell by looking at the seeds, so I guess finding it would depend on who you know.

It's a pretty weak effect, like being slightly drunk, and it's hard to judge without being already in pain. I'm sure the sap cold be refined, it has a high water content.

I agree on not wanting to be addicted during a crisis, but the same would be true for any pain meds. If you can't stay away and keep them in storage, better off not having them.

I am not growing any right now. And I think it would be legally risky to go into it too much.

Just believe me, they grow. Just like any plant. You can research how to scrape the bulbs and collect the sap. And, if you keep the seeds, you have an ongoing supply of pain medication.

It's not about "drugs" it's about free pain medication in time of need.
