Just take a look at the Hubble Extra Deep field image to answer the question are we alone. Nasa pointed the Hubble scope at just one absolutely tiny point in space that they believed was empty, No Galaxies, No Stars, No Planets, ONE TINY SPOT in the night sky. And they left the Hubble focus on that one tiny pinhead sized spot in empty space for ten days before developing the image.
THIS IS WHAT HUBBLE SAW IN EMPTY SPACE.

So is there life out there ??? more chances of YES than NO. Also regarding invasion by the Borg if aliens are looking to expand its probably going to be for the same reasons we go to war for TERRITORY, LIVING SPACE and RESOURCES. There must be billions of useful Inhabitable, Mineral rich UNOCCUPIED planets between us and them.

Exactly why I think aliens wouldn't be hostile. No motive to be.

The Borg though...kind of brings up at least one reason they might be. The resource THEY were interested in, was variety...in assimilating others...in that way, evolving. Of course, this is applying HUMAN thinking to the problem. For all we know...an alien may just love combat (think the Klingons, to further your Trek example)....so....

But yeah, the idea that we are alone is pretty ludicrous (and arrogant). The Universe could be TEEMING with life, but at such distances, any messages between us may still be traveling, or worse, got here back when we were still painting with poop on cave walls.

..and observing hairy, filthy us with poop on our hands painting pics got them to say;bye bye for now, just keep on doing what you do..

I'm still betting there is life yet to find in our own Solar System.
Microbes in liquid water under the surface of Mars or Ceres, or even diverse sea life in the sub-crust oceans of Europa, Enceladus, or Ganymede....

Even the recently discovered distant 9th planet could be either a Super Earth or Ice World and harbor life in geographically active areas....though more likely, it's a gas giant (compared to Earth). Until it is confirmed, no name yet, but just for fun, I'm voting for Niburu.... :D
