Apparently, assistance is for what they deem "essential" repair, but I get that. Still, if we get anything out of it, something is better than nothing. I'm not one to say we're entitled to anything, but not looking a gift horse in the mouth either...

A lot of our damage was either recreation or business related:
The wind killed my gazebo and the above ground pool (we had it drained, as was after the swimming season). It also tore up our road sign for the business, along with knocking down the mounted life size horse mannequin up there. When the power came back, a few things didn't work (so some kind of surge, etc.), such as the lights on said sign, as well as the external outlet (which is on the same circuit). Also, our hot walker (automatic horse walker), no longer works.

But, the stuff that would be covered:
Same surge knocked out one of the two AC units, so that counts. Other exterior lights damaged, are covered, as a security issue. While the porch roof and screens aren't really considered "essential", as they cause a safety hazzard, she'll see what she can do.

All in all, it was actually a pretty pleasant experience, and I had a good rapport with the inspector, and older lady, who works as a Construction Project Manager. So, just hoping anyone else who hasn't, and is in one of the affected areas, files their claim before it is too late, and can get an idea of what they help with, from my account above. Any help is better than nothing.

I'll followup once/if anything comes of it.

Least they didn't give you a body bag and directed you to some FEMA camp (sarcasm directed at some notable websites)

Glad they stopped by, hopefully you'll gets some recovery from them, did they give you a time frame when they will make a decision?

She was just the inspector. She uploads her report, then I have to keep an eye on the status of my claim. She did tell me how to claim lost wages too, but said chances are, we wouldn't qualify for any food reimbursement. (which really, I kept all my food good anyhow, even without power for nearly 5 days)...but still, I'm not one to just refuse hundreds of dollars (like I heard some folks got). But, between the wife and I, we make too much. (still doesn't mean we aren't paycheck to paycheck).

I've always felt that it's a mistake to count on the government for anything. My opinion is; a big part of prepping is to be independent and not expect, nor ask for any assistance from the government (tax payers).

I'm not "counting on them" for anything. But I'm also not going to turn down free money either. ;) Momma didn't raise no fool....

Yep. And I'm one of those taxpayer. FEMA came thru with a deposit!
