I am looking for a detailed map of my state of oklahoma and other states if i could get my hands on it in case the worst possible situation happens. I have not found really any good maps out there, does anyone know of any?
Amazon carries the Maps and Gazetter book of topo maps for many states. I find them very useful. They aren't quite as detailed as USGS topo maps but they do cover the entire state.I am looking for a detailed map of my state of oklahoma and other states if i could get my hands on it in case the worst possible situation happens. GPS is a good tool, until the satellites get knocked out or the signal is blocked. A map and a good compass should always be kept handy. Plus the knowledge to use the compass and how to read the maps.Even though I have a GPS I still kllp a currant Atlas .

Amazon really has crappy maps like most retailers, most of the topo multi-page book style don't use the standard 1:24,000 scale or even the older 1:63,360 scale most are using the 1:100,000 or the 1:200,000 scales making them really useless for land navigation. Order the printed maps from the USGS or MyTopo. Make sure you get waterproof maps.
Stay away from GPS
Agreed, but they are good for showing an overview of an area of an unfamiliar state. It isn't always practical, or cheap, to buy all of the topo maps of an area that you're just passing through. I have several of the Delorme map books for general information about an area in a new state, but also have stacks of topo maps of particular areas I'm most interested in.Amazon really has crappy maps like most retailers, most of the topo multi-page book style don't use the standard 1:24,000 scale or even the older 1:63,360 scale most are using the 1:100,000 or the 1:200,000 scales making them really useless for land navigation. I wish that mine were waterproofed too. Some of mine have been used so much out in the field that they're about worn out. I make a lot notes on the maps too for later reference. Maybe its time to start replacing them with the water proof variety. When I was working overseas I had a large Raven map of Alaska hanging on the wall in my office. Just a little reminder of home.Think I paid $13 a map, I have about 62 maps in all that cover 5 counties, all are waterproof 24" x 36" 1:24,000 maps and of course I have my regular street maps and township maps.
Might consider laminating them at a print shop?
