The bear grylls machete and gear has been recalled sooo many times I'll never trust his products. The machete has broken over and over and so have the knives. People have been seriously injured using this gear.

Used my 18" SOG Safri and it worked great no bounce or vibes . Tempared well no bend or break .

I'm looking at either the 18 inch Sogfari or the Cold Steel All-Terrain Chopper, at a whopping 21 inch blade length. Not sure if I need quite that much so I might go with the Sogfari.

The Ontario 18 inch looks nice too. This will be more for clearing and bush whacking. Self defense is already covered by other blades.

Nooooo the Sogs are crap! A saw blade on the back of the machete is just useless and dumb, Not to mention it helps it get snagged in brush. I like the all terrain chopper but its kind of a hybrid fighting sword,
. Carrying a machete and a fighting sword is too redundant for me. I use the machete for both brush and fighting. Ontario makes good machetes so I won't complain any about that choice But SOG has really declined in its quality unless it's one of the seal pup lines. If you want a chopper that works like a machete and an axe get the Cold Steel jungle machete. This is hands down the best damn machete I've ever worked with, and every review of it people were shocked at how deep it bites in trees and how simply it goes through brush.

Thanks for the advice. I would've thought the saw would provide some nice versatility but I obviously don't use a machete very often, heh. Snags are no bueno.

First question for grylls, 'how come you don't use the products you ponder off unto the unsuspecting' and shame on gerber aka fiskars (ya, I'm still irked at gerber over this)

One point to disagree with is the saw does have a use . I've cleared alot of fence rows and brush and after hacking all that brush and saw briars you flip your machette over and hang the saw in the tangle and drag it out of your way . The saw could be used as a saw but I never have needed to . When picking a machette also lok at the handle the cheap camp machettes with the squared off handle will wear the skin off your hand in heavy use . The cold steel , SOG are good choices but the all around best I've used is the old U.S military issue ones . I never have used any of the Bear Grylls stuff mainly because of the orange handles .

If you need a saw get a good folding hand saw. Putting it on a machete isn't as functional as it seems.

I have a wire saw that would work really well if it had actual handles instead of little thumb rings. I'm in the market for a better one. They seem smaller/lighter than a folder.

I keep a od green folding saw with my sniper gear .

I have broke too many wire saws and the energy needed to use em is substantial compared to the folder also they are two handed use, if your injured broken arm hand hurt shoulder etc.. The wire saw would be of little use, the folding saw uses less energy and can be used with one hand

Just scored a Cold Steel Kukri Machete. Saw a guy cut a tree down with one of those on YouTube as well do I was prepared to settle for it if I couldn't find the Jungle Machete. I'm happy with the purchase, but not the big ugly white sticker on the side of the blade! Looks like it needs to be sharpened as well but I like the grip and the heft of the thing.
