Hi form k.y I have been looking for a good knife for back up work when I can't go for me gun I was thinking that a fix blade with a handguard is what I need but other than that I don't have a idea what would you guys recommend oh yeah what would you guys say about the karbar Marin knife the only one that I have handled was my grandfather's that he brought back from the war he thought it was the best

Hi,that's a very good one, then cold steel has some nice blades too,I got myself the GI-tanto and modified it slightly, Roninsensei has some pics and vids about how to in the blades section.
that section is loaded with info, check it out.

I looked at the g.i the only thing I was I did not know how good the guard would be because they look kind of small and I have heard that a tanto can be kind of hard to sharpen

Cold Steel, karbar, Ontario are 3 of the best brands, the whole point to knife fighting is being up close and personal, if you're not that efficient at knife fighting it's best to not get involved in a knife fight against an unknown assailant, if you are caught off guard than a 3 1/2" dagger may be a better choice instead of a full length fighting knife such as the kabar Marine knife you mentioned, if the perps are already upon you than the kabar is a pretty big knife to draw out of it's sheath when your space is already occupied ;)

Huh never thought about it like that I have had some training with a knife but I would be the first to say I am only at the base level the only thing I would wonder would one that size be big enough to do anything with

I love the KaBar and own several though most of my knifes are for woodcraft/bushcraft (survival) While the KaBar is a hell of a knife it's not the best survival knife, I really try to prep for survival not fighting, while I am prepared for a fight it's not my focus, I'm older, slower and have a family that takes precedence thus avoid and taking evasive action is the lessor of the two evils to keep the family safe, learning to knife fight is not a bad trate to have just don't make it the focal point to prepping, depending on where one lives your more opt to run out of water than engage in a knife fight ;)

Oh yeah running is always my first choice and if it comes to a fight my 45 is going to be the first choice It just my dad and my grandfather who were the two that learned me most of what I know about staying alive in dangerous times always told me your knife is the last of last resorts but if it comes to that it well not jam and well not run out of ammo and is some spots can be more deadly then a gun

what I did with my gi-tanto was to grind the upper part of that hand guard away ( advice from mr Knife aka Roninsensei) comes out from the sheet easier, but Mav has a very good point indeed;no experience get the hell out of Dodge ;)

My big knife is an AK47 bayonet combi, its Brutal but for a PDW knife I carry a CRKT Sting 1 A boot knife
Tool knife AG RUSSELL STING.jpg

That a nice one the only thing is I would think that without a handguard it would be dangerous about cutting yourself if you use it in a stabe

I HATE AMERICANS (OK I dont really) but its not bloody fair I DO resent what you guys have access to, A while ago I find that AG Russell launched the utterly sexy STING 3B but did not sell em in the UK. Then I find out only yesterday that AG Russell made a limited edition SURVIVALIST sting in honour of Jerry Aherns character John Thomas Rourke who carried a sting, and he only made 100 of em worse he only sold em in the US. You selfish bastards :) .

Why does America hate me so much? I've been a good survivalist since 1979 loyal to the cause and the principles developed by Tappan, Benson, Cooper, Ahern etc but you deny me a Sting. I lost my own Sting 1A in the 80s on the North York Moors and I've not had a better CQ blade since.

So maybe you guys that are more experienced with knives can explain this to a total green Horne that is a nice dagger but don't you worry that without a handguard you could get cut with a hard hit with it and your hand going up on the blade I would be the first to admit maybe I am not seeing something plus I don't know that much about daggers the only fighting knives I ever handle was my dad's Bowie knife and my grandfathers karbar Marin knife

The perfect knife has a choil or handguard, but this is the blade you have under your armpit or across the small of your back, up your sleeve or in your boot, so its a compromise so it lays flat and smooth. I believe that the best knife you can have in a fight is the one you have with you, and the small boot knife ( a wonderful American concept) is more likely to be on your person than a larger full tanged blade with choils, hand guards etc because they dont dig in are more comfortable and more concealable.

The only other fixed martial blade I would consider would be a modern Tanto style and again most of them dont have choils, stops or guards either. But it is purely personal choice.

Oh ok but the thing is don't you worry about your hand slide on the blade
Yes of course there is a small percentage of risk thats why I said boot knives are a compromise. IE its better to have a comfortable knife on your person when you need it, than to have a full blown cross guarded, choiled, finger guarded blade at home in your bedroom cos its not comfortable to carry or wear. However the boot knife if well made and with non slip grips is no more risky to your fingers than 99% of modern folding lock knives cos most of them have no guards either. My hand could slip using a boot knife, but it could also slip on my Cold Steel Voyager or my Blade Tech Hunter lite folder, or even on my steak knife. Many blades like the CRKT sting ( the one piece all metal thing up the page have indents for your thumb to reduce the risk of slippage. other blades have none slip scales. Some folks wrap their handles in Paracord or Self Amalgamating rubber wrap. Anything to reduce the risk from slip. Final choice is your Sir. I like the smooth low profile of a high quality boot knife primarily cos I'm more likely to EDC it and have it when I need it

Must admit that over the years I have split and stabbed my own fingers plenty of times skinning rabbits, gutting fish, cutting leather etc So I do understand your concerns and it has to come down to your own educated choice. I suggest visiting a quality knife dealer and ask to handle some blades with no slip grips.

looks nice, why don't you PM Roninsensei about it?
