Artical from survivalpedia.

Farmers in the old days didn't use fertilizer, machinery, or other modern cheats. They had to be smart.Instead, they strategically planted crops, that killed each other's pests, generated each other's energy, and enriched the soil for their neighbor. And the modern word for it? Permaculture. And it could improve your harvest ten-fold.

I know some plants leave more nitrogen in the soil than they use. Also, rotating crops to avoid certain pests. I'd love to hear more ideas and tricks that work!

I always grow nasturtium and marogolds in my veg garden. nasturtiums are irresitable to blackfly so make a good sacrificial plant and marigolds are a great insect repellant. Grow in the greenhouse among tomatoes and chillies they keep whitefly away.
