It is not so simple as that, though. I was raised in a white suburb and didn’t even go to school with any Black students until junior high. But I have been educated on perceptions... that mine, because of the isolation, did not understand how different life would be if I wasn’t born white. Recently the racism of the US has been more and more emboldened, and underscores that a deep rooted racism does exist, and up to recently, I was unaware on how bad it is. Just look at posts in Facebook if you want to waste some time. I am not calling anyone here racist, just pointing out that understanding is critical. I cannot say that my life now would be anywhere like it is if I were Black or Hispanic or Muslim. I have experienced blatant sexism both bad, and actually sort of good as I probably didn’t get tickets because I was female.
I would think that you can agree that racism exists, right? So the backlash of injustice is at least in part justified. When it is not ok for athletes to peacefully take a knee to highlight innocent people getting killed and it is ok for violence to be done on people of color for no reason (using a cell phone in a back yard, purchasing a toy gun for a child, etc.) then we do have a problem that needs to be addressed and studied. I guess my point is that we can’t just think that the playing field is level for all.
