I have a serious question.

Is it racist if I state a fact? I ? If i mention that when reading the news I noticed that most crime in South Nashville seems to be people with Hispanic names. If I say this, is it considered a racist remark?

I believe it would be conceived that way by many even if it is stating fact. We are screwed when we can't call and duck a duck.

Self righteous social watchdogs and ignorant people will always cry racism at the drop of a hat.

Clearly....when roughly 70% of prisons are filled with blacks and hispanics, the system is racially biased and unfair. Don't bother understanding that roughly 70% of the crime is committed by them.

I have no complaints about the duck system, Robin.

If it's said by a White person, according to the liberal media and certin demographics, then it would be "racist". But according to me, the truth or an opinion, is never "racist". Plus I don't give a shit whether someone considers something that I say is racist. That's their problem. I'm sick of certin groups of people playing the race card, or pretending to be a victim. Grow up and get a life and a job.

South Nashville just charged 2 teens with 5 armed robberies in 2 hours.

They were very busy. I can't tell you their names because that would make me a racist.
Parts of Nashville are as safe as a City can get . Other parts are getting very dangerous. Crime ridden and Gang Land . Some outskirts areas like Laverne have went from a great place to live to crime central .

They jump from Antioch (South Nashville) to Lavergne (Rutherford Co.) and lower taxes. Lavergne is not a very good place N't ore.

the British Police had to stop "stop and search" because too many Blacks were getting stopped and that upset the p.c. brigade, this was in a predominately Black area where Blacks were committing most of the crime, if a witness says "the burglar was a black man" then you aren't going to stop and search whites are you? its counter productive. but that's lost on the pc mob, all they can do is shout RACIST.

These days, if you have to ask, you can bet that SOMEONE will take it as racially charged.

Personally, I could care less what color, creed, etc. someone is, but that also doesn't change the fact that stereotypes exist for a REASON. You don't like the stereotype? Fine. Then don't BE it. But, until I have more to go on, yeah, you can bet that I'm going to make assumptions. That's only human.

And it's got zip to do with color. It's really got more to do with manner of dress, way one is acting, sheer number of people together, etc.

Case in point. Who am I rolling up my window and locking the doors for?

a) one lone black guy in casual dress clothes
or
b) 3 white guys, with baggy pants, wife beater shirts, and hats cocked on their heads.

I'm rolling it up for b.

See? Not about color. Not all stereotypes are.

I can only answer for myself but...

Racism or what someone defines as racist is an individual thing.

In your case if you merely said that "All of the names of people who had committed a certain crime on the evening news were Hispanic." And that was a true statement, personally I can't see how that is racist.

If on the otherhand you said something along the lines of "all Hispanics commit crime." For me, that's racist.

My feelings on how society and the media deal with racism are mixed, personally I don't agree with anything that judges a person purely by their colour, looks, sex or sexuality, size etc etc and I agree that those attitudes should be frowned upon. People should treat other people on their individual merits as human beings.

If it were true that the majority people of a certain race or from a certain place do a certain negative thing then we should have the balls to notice the correlation and drill down to the root cause to find out why so that we can give that community the help it needs to rectify any situation without the fear of being called racist.

Yep, sorry, but I'm not on the hook for the actions of my ancestors, or my race, or my gender, etc..

Nor are YOU entitled to any kind of recompense for how YOUR ancestors were treated. They are not YOU.

I do know that my family (southern farmers) did have slaves back then. As a kid, I even met a man who was a direct descendant of a slave who worked for the family. He still lived in the same small town, etc. He was actually a close family friend, and always had nothing but good things to say about how his folks were treated, at least from his stories of it. From his telling, they were always treated like employees and family members. The way he put it, they were all clothed, fed, had a roof over their heads, and were even schooled with the rest of the kids.

Doesn't make it right. But it was an interesting insight into the idea that not all those who utilized slave labor, were evil or monsters. The act itself is monstrous, but this also doesn't mean many folks were not treated badly.

To this day, I've never seen race relation issues in that small town, even though it's as hick as you can get otherwise.

Makes sense, because the family graveyard also has reverent memorial marble stones for them as well, dating back to the early 1800's. It's pretty obvious that this likely wasn't the norm back then.

Oh well, just as I can't take the blame for what they did, I can't take credit for them being decent enough to 'em either. But, I'm glad to have heard it from a more or less direct source. Sadly, he passed sometime in my teens. He does have a couple kids though, who are about my parents' age.

Most of what we know about my great great great grandfather (Plantation owner and Confederate officer) came from accounts told us by my Great Uncle Ab. Uncle Ab got the stories from first hand accounts told to him by former slaves, who stayed after emancipation.

When I read the book about Holt Collier, a lot of the things in that book sounded just like what Uncle Ab told me. Holt Collier was a slave from the Mississippi Delta that fought for the Confederacy and received a pension as a Confederate veteran. He was Teddy Roosevelt's guide on the famous "Teddy Bear Hunt". Relations between the races were not anything like what you have been led to believe. No that doesn't justify slavery, and yes there were abuses, but the 1832 Mississippi Constitution (30 years before the Civil War) made slave trading illegal, and also contained this language:

They (the State Legislature) shall have full power to oblige the owners of slaves to treat them with humanity, to provide for them necessary clothing and provisions, to abstain from all injuries to them extending to life or limb, and in case of their neglect or refusal to comply with the direction of such laws, to have such slave or slaves sold for the benefit of the owner or owners.

I own some of the same land My Family owned since the mid 1700's . They did not own slaves but worked their own fields and share cropped on other farms . Their land covered miles now its broke up into small farms with most sold off Generations ago . Its intresting that after the Civil War one of the biggest farms in this area was owned buy a former Slave . The Owners made a deal with Him that if He kept His Family on the Farm and worked it until They passed away His Family could keep the farm . The descendents of that Slave still live on part of that land and another part of that farm is the only Black Community in this rual part of the County .
