solar power and windmill power sounds good to me..like you said sir cody.windmill parts will wear out.one of 2 things a person can do.either get one from a manufacture pluse spare parts, like bareings blades ect ect...or manufacture your own with spare parts to boot..but that means makeing sure there's plenty of grease on hand to last quiet a few years to..and as for soalr panals go.low maintance.keeping them clean.check them time to time to make sure thier still real secure n all.check wireing comeing from them time to time.

There is actually a company that makes inverter's that will allow you to check on your panels at anytime by just going on your computer. It will show you how much energy your panels are producing and show you which panel or panels are not producing if that happens. Which may be due to a cloud or maybe the neighbor kid threw a frisbee on your roof and it landed on the panel. But atleast you can just see if they're producing with a click of your mouse instead of guessing or doing unnecessary cleaning of the panels, but rain should keep them clean enough. Have you thought about going solar?

I designed and built a solar system for some investers 2years ago. It kinda turned me against the whole deal..My invention . My patents. My work. Your lawsuits.

I apologize for my confusion Bill, Im not sure what you are saying, Solar has been around for well over 100 years. Are you trying to say you invented solar power?

I like where your heads at, solar is the way to go, the thing with wind is that it has a lot of moving parts and can break down at anytime, solar has no moving parts and can last up to 50 yrs or longer with no maintenance, I can give you all the info you need on that if you would like!

I would like that alot!

To tryto keep it short...solar panels typically work at10% to15% efficiency. They work by photons bumping electrons free from a silica base that has been doped with ...say boron or phosphorus. The problem is only a specific wavelength of light will free the electrons. They try to compensate by stack I g layers of differently doped panels together. Mine works on the principle of rather than stacking panels, changing sunlight to a specific wavelength. I used a frisnell lens to focus the light on a prism and sort the wavelengths.the prism pumps lasers who have specific wavelengths which emit their signal through a fiberoptic cable which has been doped specifically for the wavelength of light the laser emits...the electrons flow down the copper jacket on the fiberoptic cable. Which lucky for us the cables happened to be made from silica already. Anyhow ...I wound up with an overpriced project that only NASA and the military can afford . That works great.. 87% efficiency . It really blows standard panels out of the water..it will also make a GREAT platform for the star wars program for missile defense. By the way the military doesn't have to honor patents or pay you to use them..but all this to say ...I'm not feeding you a line...it just seemed like you were challenging the authenticity of my statement..

The gov't is ALWAYS taking...they make like it is for the greater good but it is only for THEIR good. While I'm sorry that they took advantage of you, you learned an awesome lesson...trust them only as far as you can throw them. One of the lessons my messed up father taught me was to trust no one and rely on others even less.

As for the subject of internet when shtf...why bother with it? If shtf to such an extent that EVERYONE everywhere is totally messed up then there will be no internet...if shtf in only ONE region then eventually things will settle down and regular utilities will eventually resume. Satellite internet using power just like everything else...if your power goes out you need to power your computer and your modem attached to the satellite dish. But then you need other people to communicate with. Personally, if/when shtf, I'll power my computer only long enough to get my saved data files (manuals how to do things, recipes, other necessary info, and etc).

When shtf, I'm not going to need any extra exercise...just existing is gonna take enough effort. So, the bicycle generator and hand crank generator are NOT on my list of things to have around. I'll be making do with everything I can that doesn't require any power.

As for this...when shtf, I'm not going to be using anything that requires power so what good is a panel that I check its status on a computer...I'd need power for my computer to ensure my panel is producing power? Sounds like a problem to me.

I want to say that I don't feel solar panels are a bad option. They work well within their limitations.but the real fix is our power consumption.you realistically are probably going to have to make do with less energy. A lot less.but I will add that on a level playing field solar and wind would never enter the game if their dad wasn't coaching the team. Albeit solar has its niche advantage , its not nearly what its p
Cracked :up to be. Its one of those shell games you want to believe but , it just isn't there. Its like...well , how many of y'all remember voyager....a small satellite we sent to take pictures of mars in the late 70 s . Well it happened to do its job( although it was a low budget project at the time) , a little too well.it was expected to be destroyed in the asteroid belt , but it wasn't.as it flew out , we spent more money building bigger and bigger antennae to be able to receive images as time went on.we got pictures from it as it passed one planet after another.....point is , its traveling through space at 40000 miles an hour or so. It took it about 35 years to leave our solar system at that speed...wow ...and the next event it will intersept in space is in just 2600 years. Yet every kid in school is believing we are just about to cross the star trek threshold and travel to other galaxies. ....not in the next 2000 years. We are not even close. Heck they didn't even see the asteroid that blew up over Russia coming. Technology is not where they lead you to believe. But as long as they can convince you that we are right on the threshold, you'll keep pumping money into it. Cha- ching ....money in the bank if I were dishonest. I'm not....so what does all this have to do with solar panels....the solar industry is a farce. Without daddy putting his son on shortstop he'd never be there. Here's the real numbers as of 2010 per kilowatt of electricity.
Natural gas and oil. $00.03. That's three cents
Coal. $00.04 that's four cents
Hydroelectric. $07.00. That's seven dollars
Nuclear. $16.00 that's sixteen dollars
Wind and solar. $27.00 that's twenty seven dollars per kilowatt..
Without government subsidies these businesses don't remotely have a chance to compete.they just fall into their little niches of use fullness and practically disappear. They have uses but not the broad uses they have sold the world on. Our technology is not about to crash the door down like they imply. Just so we will keep pouring our money to them. After all , its not your money ....let her rip

Hmmmm.... I understood exactly jack Bill. My brain doesn't work that way. Now if you were to put me next to you while building it, I could understand what you were doing and this is why I most likely won't go solar. Heck, I don't even have a generator, I don't 'get' them. Yeah, I know that sounds lame as heck, but I'm being honest. If we lose the grid, I'll have my candles, lamps, and lanterns for light, the springhouse to keep my food cold, wood to heat the house, water and to cook with, I have the horses to haul me hither and yon. I was born in the wrong time.

I wish that I could 'see in my head' what you are talking about. Maybe at the meet you can walk me through something simple. I feel kind of stupid here, but just being honest.:(

What you are calling stupid is rediculious . I'll say it another way. ......people if the grid goes down very long....we are going to have to imitate Old Anorak's lifestyle. Like it or not....your not gonna have all your toys. We are gonna have to suck it up , wipe the tears out of our eyes, quit crying about what we don't have any more, and do what we as Americans quit doing a long time ago....sweat and work hard to get what we need....like people used to do.

exactly bill..and anoark..there's nothing wrong with the way you choose to live..even like bill said.you wont have certain things when we end off the grid..and to me thats a pluse,on acount that means less for you to do when it it comes a new way of life for all of us..less you have to do to adapt the better for you and family..

Bub a there's a lot of old windmills in your neck of the woods a guy can pick up for a song.just remember that the windmill spins on its axis as the wind changes direction and your power connection has to swivel with it. Try taking a 1" long piece of copper pipe wrapining it with an insulated bushing from 1" ID to 2" OD with another copper pipe 2" another insulated bushing in concentric circles around the axis bearing .solder on two wires from the bottom to run down the tower and align two brushes two travel the power head at the top. I'll just draw you a picture. Call me if you need help.
Good luck and Godspeed.

Some people are under the misapprehension that when the SHTF there is going to be power to run computers and other electrical appliances, But will there be power?
if its an EMP everything is gone . Question, Can we prep for every eventuality?

This is how I look at it. When the shtf our governments will most likely lock down the web. Computers will be but a thing of the past and people will actually have to learn how to have face to face conversations once again. What a novel idea, huh?
