When I got my HAM one of you nice people told me the frequency mode number and channel mode numbers that I should keep mine on in case of emergency.

I believe one was 146.520 and 462.612. The last doesn't sound correct to me.

And the Channel mode was 140.125 and 440.125

Does this sound correct.
I don't have my license and was told that these are popular in case of emergency. Thanks for your input.

I have never heard anyone talking any place I set it though.

Look up the national calling frequencies for the bands you are interested in. Also, find any nearby repeaters and get those programmed in. If you have a radio that can go outside of the ham bands, you can find your local emergency services radio frequencies online, make sure to program in the correct tone and make sure to turn off duplex so that you won't communicate on the frequency. Chirp is a fairly good program if you haven't used it.

Thanks. The thing is..... my daughter and I don't have a license. I just have them in case SHTF scenario. Then it won't matter. I have a list that I got off the Internet, but some prepper gave me a couple of frequencies that most people use in emergencies. Thank you for your help.

I am going to go out on a limb as my first post but.... you really ought to get a license. The test is only $15 and it’s not difficult.

That way you can practice how to use the equipment, learn about the emergency nets in the area, know how to operate when SHTF and not interfere with others hams who are also operating during SHTF, maybe even in an official capacity.

Well here it goes. I’ll put my flame suit on.

No suit needed. I looked into groups and testing, but nothing happening around here. I'll just wait. I did get my FCC number though.

I will probably get the minimal license soon just to be able to practice some ans see what these things can do. I kind of got them as walkie talkies, but the ability to get news is a big part as well. As of now, I have two unopened baeofengs with whip antennae’s, un programmed, and I know absolutely squat about them. The usb is supposed to arrive weds, so I will get them programmed shortly afterwards, hopefully. I will post what I learn as well with whatever I learn.

Like I've posted before I have the hand held Baofeng 8 watts. Then I just ordered the Baofeng walkie talkies for my son and I to play on. They are great when I'm in the Chicken coop and stuff and need help. I don' have to walk to the house or yell

There is a site that has all the practice questions. It is called HamPractice.com or something like that. It has the actual questions, but they aren't in order. You can take practice tests etc.

It was Cayman or ridinthegoldwing that sent me to that site. They are members here or were at the time. I'l look harder for the actual site.

I also bought Ham radios for dummies.

I’ve been studying for the last 5hrs on hamstudy.com. It uses the approach of you study to learn the test questions and can pass pretty easily. I will admit though, the test questions seem like they expect you to build the damn thing, not just operate it.... there was a lot more to it than I expected. I guess it’s like most things in life, the more you learn about it the more you realize you could spend a lifetime learning it all! I am sure this site will help me pass the test, but I do want to study some more about it all, so the book you bought was probably a smart move. Hell, I’m an electrician and didn’t know how little I knew about resistors, induction and transistors before today. Either way, I hope to be ready in a week for it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Brent, I am a smart person, but the math equations just made me go whaaaaa? I am a visual learner and finally said "hell no". No one is going to be looking for my license when SHTF. Why do I need to know about all the parts being connected to the other parts etc? I just wanted so emergency call letters just in case. My Ham Radio For Dummies book goes all back through the history. Don' care

Lol! I understand. Kind of silly to need to know that much to talk on a friggin radio. The site I mentioned though helps you memorize the test questions and answers. They say they are the exact same questions that are on the test. All you have to do is learn them well and know which answer is right. You don’t have to learn the reason behind why it’s right. Yes, it’s kind of cheating..... but hey, you can learn this in a week before taking the test vs studying for three months.
The main reason I want the test is to be able to use the radios to learn how they work. You’re right about after shtf not needing a license, but that is probably not the best time to start trying to learn how to find a signal. I will let you know how I do with it anyways.

I have a Baofeng, I have not set it up, I tried for 90 minutes. I cant get my old windows XP PC to see it. I think it has a comm port conflict.

I’ve heard from many that it could be tricky to program. One guy wrote that he had to plug in and unplug the cord repeatedlily to finish the job. Hope mine arent too tough to figure out. I will definitely get my son to help with the task. He likes the challenge of when something isn’t working on the computer, why I’ll never know.....

This is how i did it. Just cram and learn the answers. Getting into it will spur you to actually learn the material more. Its hard to care too much when you cant do anything. I studied for a few weeks off and on, then crammed the day of the test and passed with ease.

I may be able to assist programming once you get the computer to recognize the connection. I use a program called chirp, and it was really nice.

Glad to actually hear from someone who tested this way. Everything I read said it works best as well. I just opened the radios and put them on the chargers so the batteries will be full when I do program them. I was surprised at how small the radios actually are. I guess that’s good though when walking in the woods. The antennae’s are about 18” and may make them a little less carefree when walking, but from everything I’ve read the stock antennae are crap. I’m sure usage makes a big difference, but do you have any idea how long the battery lasts on a full charge?

This is the walkie I got for Christmas. We've been about 200 yards so far and it was a strong signal. Better than the Midlands I had before.

They said 36 miles, but that's bull. Maybe on top of mountain with no trees.
I wonder if the baeofengs that you have would work better as walkie talkies than these? I’m looking forwards to learning to use and try them anyways.

Yeah, Brent, the only thing going is my daughter has the other HAM and she is 15 miles away.

I got these for my son so we can talk when he is outside or I'm in the garden and need something. It too far to yell and I'm too lazy to walk back and forth.

The links above are pretty much what i got for my setup. I used the big battery and i dont think i have had to charge it yet, so its life is pretty good. The antenna is fairly large, but provides all three bands in one package, so im a fan. The usb programmer is needed to use your computer to program it.

You dont have to get the tri band if youre on a budget. If i recall it is significantly more expensive, but provides the ability to use 1.25m bands in addition to the 2m and 70cm bands. Given that my understanding is correct, 1.25m is a fairly uncommon band for use, so you may enjoy having a somewhat lesser used band for communication. Ive had good reception even on the small antennae that come with the radio. I could pick up a repeater 7 or so miles away under less than ideal placement as the repeater is down in a "bowl" of the landscape on 2m.
