Irma vs Andrew.

* Irma is 75 mile radius for hurricane force winds. Andrew was 45 mi. In area, that is 6k sq miles vs 18k sq miles. Almost 3 times the area.

* One of the few 'saving graces' with Andrew was that the storm moved FAST. Maybe 15 mph? Right now Irma is moving at 8 mph and that slow speed is expected to continue. Half the speed, twice the rain, twice the time at hurricane winds, LOTS more damage.

* Andrew came straight into land. When over land, the hurricane quickly losses strength. It looks like Irma will stay over water as it goes up over most of the state. That means lots more strength and rainfall and wind.

* From the 'live feeds' listed above, it looks like power went out around 11pm yesterday. And the eye doesn't go over the keys for a few more hours.

It's too late for anyone in south Florida to do anything. Northern Florida, they have precious few hours to do anything.

There's all kinds of stupid idiots out there. . .saw countless pet rescues in TX from dogs, cats, horses and cattle. Some left dogs chained to trees and in Port Acres, many horses tied to fence post. Didn't even give them a fighting chance. Just hurts my heart. People say that their pets are like family but yet treat them this way.

At least they put them in a shelter. . .which I guess some people shelters don't except pets maybe?

One more thing. At this point, people are prepared or they are not for Irma.

So... TURN OFF YOUR TV. Turn off your news. STOP watching the minute-by-minute hurricane updates. Yes, it can be almost hypnotic, but stop it.

I went through this with Andrew. Stayed up all night watching report after report. Same thing over and over. Finally fell asleep. It is a massive waste of time. Go on with your day. Go to Church. Go review your preps. Go look into how you can help hurricane victims. But start by turning off the TV.

It can (and will) all be summarized this evening in 5 minutes. Same tomorrow.

The storm center is not supposed to reach us until midnight, but we are already having gusts that are breaking off limbs and knocking the power out temporarily. Steady rain but not very heavy. Limbs down in our yard, next door and across the street.

Spooky cold outside. NNE winds - Irma must be bringing down some cold air from up north. We have some windows open to enjoy the cool, and the gusts are slamming inside doors every once in a while.

Time to break out the backup power just in case.

I hear sirens outside, and something is making racket, sounds like limbs falling on someone's house. Gusts just started getting intense as I was writing this. Windspeed inside the house about 5 mph, LOL. Guess I better close some windows...

I thought it was an outer band, but when I looked at a weather radar map, it was actually the main band of Irma passing through - 175 miles from the center of the storm!

Even though the storm center is supposed to pass right over us later today, I think we are out of the woods. Just a light steady rain outside and no wind now to speak of. Wind has supposedly dropped to 15 mph, but you can't really hear it anymore, and should stay there throughout the night and into tomorrow afternoon when it will start dropping off again.

This is a comparison between Irma & Harvey, and how to change behavior.

First, read this: https://www.americas1stfreedom.org/...-shot-during-first-hours-of-hurricane-harvey/
Short version (for those who didn't click...), with Harvey, in 2 separate events, 2 early home robbers were surprised when the home owners shot and killed. Yes, other break-ins did happen, but they were few. It's funny how the thug-network spread the word quickly. First idiot was shot in the head & died at the hospital. Second idiot was found dead at the home, I appreciate him not wasting a hospital bed for a few hours (was that mean to say?).

Meanwhile... Florida & Irma.
At least the police are showing up, but people are just getting arrested. Yippie (note dripping sarcasm). LOTS of break-ins happening. Police are trying to keep things under control with very limited success. It seems thugs don't really care about arrests, courts don't even slap their hands any more. So expect lots of crime in Florida. This may sound cruel, but too bad the first few thieves weren't shot and killed with some nice media coverage. It would have stopped LOTS of further crimes.

Though a difference between homes and stores/shop. A lot more people stayed home thus able to protect the home in Harvey whereas with Irma the business owners took advice to evac. I do think it's an unfair comparison.

ONE MASSIVE GIVE THANKS that those bar stewards from Blackwater are not roaming FLA like they did after Andrew trying to disarm home owners, shooting innocent survivors etc doing anything EXCEPT helping.

Be glad the leftist media were not there because the slant they would put on the blue meanies killing innocent looters would have started a riot.

I live in Palm Beach County, in S.E. florida, and am just picking up the pieces after Irma. I just got the internet back.

We expected to get pummeled by it (Irma was a Cat 5 at one point), since we were, at one time, in the center of the cone.

A lot of my prepping was helpful and spared me aggravation.

The big thing was that I had stockpiled canned food and bottled water months ago, so we didn't have to go out and fight for things in the stores with long lines and empty shelves.

My girlfriend always judged me as a spendthrift and a hoarder because I was storing up all of this stuff...yet I was vindicated in the end. It was very small of me, but I said 'I told you so' a few times and got things thrown at me. In fairness to my girlfriend, though, we have a very small place...and she is an orderly, neatness-minded person who can't stand clutter in her living space...and there is nothing wrong with this.

I, on the other hand, tend to be a packrat.

We are still without power in this sweltering heat (88° and 90% humidity), so I spend a lot of time in my underware (or less, if you know what I mean) indoors.

We set aside extra food for the animals, filled the bathtub up with water (although the water never stopped running), and set aside the few medications that we need.

We are only drinking stored water because there were some reports of bad tapwater in some areas...although we are, supposedly, fine.

I've gotten to know my neighbors a little better. I've dropped off bottled water and food to a few of them, and helped out a little with the cleanup.

Without the Internet and with no cable, the best resources were a crank radio/flashlight combo by Eaton (it also charges cell phones), and a large supply of trashy paperback books picked up from thrift stores.

Also, I stored several clean restaurant style 5 gallon buckets of water, and I have a blue survival straw water purifier that is, supposedly, good for over 900 gallons of water. I plan to switch to my bucket drinking water if and when the bottled water runs out.

I hope our experience helps everyone.
