Outside security perimeter lights should definitely be motion sensored but you should still be able to control them by either switching them of totally or some of them have have the abilty to be switched on permanantly when flicking the lightswitch on and of two or three times.

In addition to security lights invest in a good pair of night vision goggles at least level 3 or higher, preferably with a head harness so as to keep your hands free, takes a bit of time and practise to work efeciently with them on.

When security lights do come on your first insticnt would be to go to the closest window to check what you see. It is very important to install your security lights that they do not create a backsplash of light on any windows on your home, when you move a curtain or in front of the window you will bee seen. To solve the problem have somebody go outside and play intruder so they can establish where your problem areas are. Either then install the light in different location, add a reflective funnel around the light, but the best solution is plant post about a meter away from your house and about two meters tall and attach your light to that.

Security lights that stay on permanently through the night creates shadows in your garden and creates dark spots where intruders can hide. The way to prevent this is to install flood lights on a 10 to 15 meter mast.

Inside your home a lot of devices such as celphone chargers, clock radio`s have small led lights that give of ambient light in a room. In total darkness you can detect movement in a room from outside. Tape over these led lights with a bit of insulation tape.

When installing a camera system look for cameras that is IR (Infrared) capable and HD resolutions and also motion activated, they need a range of no less than 15 meters. If possible install them facing each other about 10 meters apart, this gives you overlapping views and you would be able too see if someone tampers with cameras as well. Here they have a IR, HD camera with a range of 400 meters with IR lazer for the light source, with high speed rotation and tilting, it is portable as well and can be mounted on vehicles roof with magnetic plates. It uses 12v power source. Cost about R 20 000-00 ($ 1500-00).

I would have thought all these security lights would attract people to that house, with all these lights they must have something worth stealing?? if you have neighbours-lights on all night may just possibly annoy them?? just a thought.

Just a bit of clarity here chaps and to save you from lots of false alarms, if you are putting motion sensors outdoors only use DUAL detection systems, IE don't just use PIR detectors, use combined Microwave/PIR detectors, if you don't every insect that walks across the detector, every passing bird or bat, every low level rodent will trigger it. This makes people turn down the sensitivity of the PIR or mask off parts of it to reduce the number of false alarms. BUT it also creates blind spots that can allow intruders to get bloody close before they are detected. Indeed if its raining on occasions the PIR does not detect an approaching intruder a all.

Using combined Microwave / PIR detectors ensures maximum range and sensitivity and minimum false alarms.

If you opt to fit a few CCTV cameras get ones that operate in low light and have at least a limited IR or II capability then you can use a couple of IR lights to fill your property with invisible to the bad guys light but is picked up by your cameras

Most houses here in a suburban setup do have security lights installed outside, it doesn`t matter if you have something worth to steal or not, you can get killed over an old cellphone(friends got shot). The choice still remains yours if you want to put up lights or not.

What you might consider as well, if your home lends itself to such an application is to install burglar doors in your homes hallway. Pref something called a slamlock. It gives you a bit of extra time when they do come into your home and they will make a lot off noise when they break it open.

When you have been away from your home for a few hours is do a perimeter check of your house windows, doors, burglar bars ect. what we found here is that they will prep your house while you are out shopping, cut the burglarbars and then wait till its dark, either wait till the TV is on or when you are asleep, then come back and then your nightmare will start.

When installing burglar gates in front of existing doors have a extra flat lip welded to the gate so that it seals of the the space between the frame and the door when it is closed, this prevents them from wedging anything in there and forcing it open.

we have a few houses here which have "night lights" on, but none have security lights, I suppose that is just one difference between US and UK.

Mine has PIR activated 500 watt security lights out the back as does most of this street, and PIR activated welcome lights out front ?

I even wired for security lighting when I built the place here, but still have not gotten around to putting then on the house. I have one on the garage mostly so I can see after dark. Guess I need to move that higher on my list.
I think I just came to the realization that my ever evolving list will never get done!

you can never be 100% finished in prepping, its a life long job of improvement and evolution, I've been doing this since 1979 and I still consider myself to be very much a novice.

Growing up in hurricane prone areas made me a prepper before I even knew what one was. About ten years ago I took a look around at the state of the world and decided to start making steps to better my odds of surviving the mess I think we are headed for. Making a physical move of 500 miles was pretty radical and hard for me, but put me in a much more sustainable place. No doubt, I'm still learning daily too.

I try to live by this rule. "If i do one thing per day to improve the situation for my loved ones and me for tomorrow, then you have done enough." When you look back you might be amazed at what you have accomplished.

I knew I was going to like you :)

This is my rule "The meaning of justice has always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"

That's the entire point of swartberg. To hold out for long enough to rebuild society, granted there'll be bloodshed, but that is why Justice is firmly engraved in eleven languages, on eleven bricks in the dungeon bar. Come to think of it... It should be a dungeon not a restaurant.

When you see how much those bloody Afrikaaners have got done :) then you will see proper effort and commitment that makes me look like a newbie
