Opened the pool yesterday so I moved 27 containers to the deck this morning and planted tomatoes in them.. then planted peppers and tomatoes in the real garden.

I have a beautiful mock orange tree and small, brown caterpillar or worms have devoured it in 3 days. I shook it as hard as I could and about 500 or so fell off. Some on top of my head.

I thought the chickens would love them, but they wouldn't eat them.

The leave are gone for this year. I can't spray m poison because of bees and chickens.

Bt will kill the caterpillars and is organic.

Can also be found at Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot and Amazon.

Wont hurt the chicken or bees if used properly. I use it on my cabbage for cabbage loopers.

I use very few chemicals but occasionally something is needed. I keep some seven dust around and will sparingly use some on outbreaks.
Today I almost finished weeding and mulching. I have half a row to go but had to stop when the light level got low. It’s not worth mistakenly pulling some plants up with the weeds. I know it’s a never ending battle but I sure will be glad when this round of weeding is done. I mow the leaves up in the woods on the back of the property and pick them up for mulch each spring. When they are mulched they make great fertilizer. I still have a large pile of them to put in a thick bed of mulch in the gardens. I got everything watered in well today too. It’s pretty dry now but there is a good chance of rain early this week now. I also started going around all the trees and cutting any vines that are growing up them. I got several done but have two and a half acres here so it will take a few days to finish.
I have apples on most of the trees, plumbs, cherries, loads of blueberries and the blackberries are blooming now. It’s really satisfying to see all these things producing now. Grapes are loaded too. The pear trees didn’t produce this year, even though I was hopeful I knew they were still young. I think they are three years old now. Hopefully next year will see the first fruit.

Never mind the Bt. It won't work. That is a mock orange sawfly. I will attach information for you. The larvae aren't caterpillars, which are the immature stage of moths and butterflies. The pests were sawfly larvae, the immature stage of an insect closely related to bees, wasps and ants. Sawfly larvae can be recognized because they usually have eight pairs of legs; caterpillars typically have only five. The difference is important because a commonly used insecticide for caterpillar pests, Bt, Bacillus thuringiensis, doesn't kill sawfly larvae.

When all else fails I use SOAP ;)

Rained yesterday afternoon and most of the night. Did get 4 rows of red beans planted before the rain. Lots of rain in the forecast for the next several days. Grass seed should love it. I think I am going to try to pick mustard greens and can them and also pick rhubarb for the freezer in between showers. Hubby made arrangements with the local tree trimmer to get a couple loads of horticultural wood chips to use as mulch for some of the trees. Said they should have some to deliver in a couple days. Free no less. My favorite. Guess till the weather improves I will catch up on housework and quilting. Stay safe:)

So my tomatoes are still wilting. I had originally thought it was water wilt on Sunday since we had so much rain this last week, but they recovered. By the morning and evening they bounce back so it is due to the heat already. We are running about 6 degrees higher than normal right now, This morning I went out to do some pruning and picking. Today I pulled out my dehydrator and loaded all 4 trays with diced up patty squash, freeze dryer has all three trays with patty squash, canned up 11 pints patty squash, 10 pints yellow squash, 8 pints zucchini, blanched another gallon of green beans for the freezer, halved and deseeded 7 more bell peppers for the freezer, then put about 3/4 gallon of banana peppers and 3/4 gallon of jalapenos in fridge to process probably tomorrow. I know I want to candy the jalapenos and the bananas will just get pressure canned. These are very mild and can be used in place of or along side of bell peppers when cooking and will probably can them up in half pints.

So I put all my kitchen waste from canning into a bucket so hunny can take it out to the pigs. He decided he would take the patty squash middles out to his bull. . . . I was informed Charlie thanked me and really likes squash. I bet he does. :p

Sorry. Mine did that when I had them close to walnut trees. That's why mine are in containers now.

If it's FW, they will need to be burned. The plants will carry into the soil for years.

Wilting during the heat of the day is normal to a degree for tomatoes here, but it's still early in the season and I have never experienced the Parker's Whoopers and seen how they reacted. The tops (almost the top foot) of these completely wilt like they are over watered. So far they are bouncing back during the cooler parts of the day. They may need to get a sun screen on them.

I have had that happen during August. I have to water 2x per day and put a newspaper tent over them. Containers require much more water

Living in the woods we have always had ticks and fleas. Since I've had chickens, the number has deminished considerably. I'm guessing that since m it was so warm and wet last year the number seems to be way up. Just this week I have found 3 ticks embedded on my body.

I'm not afraid of disease since it is a common occurrance, I'm just pointing out that the weather did not kill them last Winter.

We just had a huge rain and the entrance to my big garden is total mud.

We have a chance of rain every day for 6 days.
I’m right there with you on the rain. I brought up fill dirt to level an area for a 16’ round pool and it’s a big mud pile right now. There won’t be any leveling it for a while yet. At least I’m not having to water other than the green house now. In a couple years when it’s time to replace the top again I will find a more open fabric to let some rain in.

We are in the same boat neighbor. I guess atleast we don't have to water. Hoping it will not wash away all that grass seed I just planted. On the flip side my raised beds are looking great. Rain knocked all the blooms off my azaleas and my peonies which just started blooming are drooping pretty bad. Wish it had held off until hubby had finished adding on more rain barrels. Would have filled them up no problem:rolleyes:

Stay safe

Ive been working away from home mostly this week so don’t know how all this rain has affected everything here. Hopefully today will be quiet with emergencies and I can check everything out but on Monday the garden was looking like it really liked it. Luckily most of the property here slopes enough that excess water just flows off down to the ponds.

Checked and emptied the rain gauge this morning. 2 1/2 inches in the last 48 hours of slow steady rain with the occasional down pour. The garden seems to be loving it with mostly cool season vegetables right now. The green peas are loaded with blooms. The cabbage is loving the cooler temps and moisture. Lettuce is also loving the cooler temps. Red beans that I planted are swelling and will be breaking ground before long. Mustard ready to pick. Beets are growing right before our eyes. Squash and green bean seeds are not up yet. Another 6 days of rain in the forecast. Hubby is working on gutter upkeep and rain barrel additions this week. He picked up 10 additional blue barrels at $7 each. He wants to add rain barrels to some of the out buildings /sheds for watering gardens etc.

I am watering today. The cushaw pumpkins, all the Parker Whooper tomatoes and a couple zucchini are wilting in the heat. I meant to start a sprinkler when I got home from work this morning but other than checking on the calf and feeding goats that was about it. With only a 10 minute nap before work yesterday and 4 hours the night before, I was done and actually slept 7 1/2_hours, only waking up a few times.

I really need to get out in the garden to do some pruning and tying up some more. It's starting to look pitiful, but hunny assured me that it is looking good compared to a friend of ours. We kind of have a competition going every year. . . :p It's all in fun. My Italian flat beans are just about done producing so will get those out to feed the goats next week and should still get a few more pickings off my Contenders. I still have the Kentucky Wonders climbing up a trellis that have not started producing yet. I am experimenting to see if those can last thru the summer. My go to favorites don't do well in our hot climiate. If I can just get enough to eat fresh during the summer would be nice. I have been thinking about maybe trying some along our woods to see if that would work. That way they would get some shade during the peak hours. my garden is full sun. Once those are done it will be replaced with some sort of dry bean. . . Lima and purple hull most likely.
