Wife friend ask the pharmacist (rite-aid) for the information packet from the pharmaceutical company instead tried to give her the store's sheet (not what she was asking for nor is it the same thing) the pharmacist did say their were a package insert for the flu vaccine but they can't pull it out until the box is empty, he said you may search online for one, she insisted on getting one that comes with the vaccine. After 20 minutes an assistant did find one and gave it to her. Figured I'll share here.

"Here are some things in the insert not on the store's sheet:
1. The single dose vial contains mercury at ≤1mcg (This is called a "trace amount" by the industry.) (The multi-vial contains 25 mcg.)
2. People with egg allergies are contraindicated.
3. "Safety and effectiveness have not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under four. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This vaccine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether fluvarin is excreted in human milk."
4. "Fluvarin has not been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility."
5. "Antibody response is low in the geriatric population."
6. "Serious reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have been observed."
7. "There are no data to assess the concomitant administration of flu vaccine with other vaccines."
8. "The vaccine has been associated with an increased frequency of Guillain-Barre syndrome."
9. "In some studies, fluvarin protected up to 50% of subjects."

and just think. folks gripe at me for not getting them...matter of fact.i haven't had any kind of shot in at least 19/20 years.even then.it was one for what i had at the time..as for tetanus, flu shots.to what ever shot.way way longer..i guess that'd be 30+ maybe 35+ years.

To be fair, if you read the possible side effects of most medications it will scare you more than most horror movies. Approx 36,000 people die from the flu each year. My take is to judge your risk and exposure against the risks of the vaccine. If you work with the public in a dense population area and have health risks, then it's probably worth the risk of getting it. One interesting thing I read was lots of people get and carry the flu and have no symptoms. I was semi retired for a while and took a job working retail for the medical benefits. While there I got the shot each year. I'm still on the fence this year about it being worth the risk and effort.

Very true Brent, flu vaccine is a different critter though than that of the majority medications. In the majority of cases the flu vaccine doesn’t go through the rigorous testing all other medications go through because of the time restraint of getting the vaccine out the door. The vaccine is being tested as its being administered to the masses, when we see commercials on television pushing pharmaceutical drugs they tell you the side effect at the end of the commercial, when the flu shots are being pushed on television side effects aren’t mentioned at all.

and that my friends is why i haven't had a vaccine of any kind in years..they don't get properly tested until folks get injected with it..and also because i figure there's more chance i'll get sick from one.compared to not getting one..

I might add though, I do understand the need to push and understand that it’s next to impossible to fully test the vaccine given each year the strain is different thus creating a very short window needed to come up with the vaccine, it’s just I’m not willing to become a test subject or statistic.

guess your body is telling you to take a break..hope you get well soon...
Thanks. My wife and kids are always telling me to take a break too. Right now it's kind of hard to take time off. We went from summer to winter literally over night. Hard to rest when it's below freezing inside the cabin.

There are side effects with any medication.

I think that the benefits far outweigh the risks when it comes to the flu vaccine.

Flu has been implicated in Parkinson's later in life, and a few doctors want to associate flu with Alzheimer's...although in fairness...the evidence for this connection is weaker and the jury is still out.

If you run the numbers, I believe Tylenol is much more dangerous and kills far more people than the flu vaccine.

As a healthcare worker, I would remove acetominophen (Tylenol) from the shelves, and I avoid it like the plague.

Wouldn't you know, after I posted my comment above I woke up about 01.30 this morning sick. Haven't been sick like this in several years.

I'm sorry you're under the weather.

I do hope you feel better.

Drink lots of fluids, see a doctor, get plenty of rest, and try to walk around a little. This helps keep some people from getting fluid in their lungs.

I agree the benefits outweigh the risks with it. It sucks if you're in that low percentage with horrible side effects, but a lot less die from those than would from the flu.

I got a chuckle from the list. So they are telling you at best you get a 50/50 odds of any benefit, and yet you must take all the risk.

One thing to note is that each year they 'guess' at what strains of the flu will be widespread. They take the flu anti-virus from those strains and use it that particular year. They could guess completely wrong, you may get exposed to less-common strains, or you're in the 50% that still get sick. Tough luck. Note that it is a new 'mix' each year, so how can they do extensive testing with all the possible combinations?

The good thing is that at least I still have a choice. I think the risk is not worth taking the flu shot. I know plenty of people who are forced by their employer to get it, my pity for them.
