I think we got our answer to that during Hurricane Katrina. That answer is a resounding NO.

Yes Katrina was a big disaster, so as the tidal wave Indonesia in 2004 where it took weeks to get help efforts going, no government nor Red Cross or UN can be trusted in a Global event, it will be everyone for himself If it goes Nuclear with the US/Russia happenings at the moment, All government will be in their Underground locations and the rest of us are left to die, and be sure Only the real preppers will have a chance as long as they are away from cities and large populations, small groups or single persons in their Bug-Out location will survive?

Do you trust the state in a major disaster?

Does the Pope shit in the woods? Is a bear catholic?

NOPE!! i dont trust them in a major disaster..but then again, they have proven that they cant be trusted to step in and do whats needed.when it comes to doing whats right more then once..

To be honest, I think the government would be more responsive than in the past, simply because it learned many lessons during previous disasters. That said though, only so much they can do, and there is a lot of red tape and other factors that will delay response time.

Of course, just relying on them to help out though, you're asking for trouble. You really have to prep yourself. These blizzards are a perfect example. The local government CAN'T help, for the same reason folks are stranded. No safe way to get in or out of anywhere! So, hopefully people stocked up for such events. Those who did, are sitting warm and cozy with a nice meal. Those who didn't are cold and starving, looking for anything left in the cupboards.

My best advice is prepare yourself for survival, and take care of you and yours first. If you can spare, reach out to help others some, but first make sure yours are taken care of. I'm not worried about the masses, just the few I can help with.

I have to agree with that as no help from Any authority will come.
As I said before, get away from the cities, leave Western civilisation if possible and go totally off the Grid to have any chance of survival, you can protect yourself and family best by hunkering down close to a rural community for possible barter and general help?

Going completely off grid though, is a pretty expensive option in most cases. Especially as you still have to have some kind of income to pay property taxes, etc., and this requires either access to a city to work in (so those expenses), or the ability to work from home (which requires technology).

That's why our goal is to increase our own self-sufficiency, while still being hooked up to the grid, but to have off-grid solutions if the time comes.
