Do You Know?

Where the nearest PURE ground or artesian water source is?

Is your gas / water / sewage systems gravity fed or pumped?

Do you know the maximum historic flood level for your area?

Do you know where your local Pharmacy supply centre is (that’s the warehouse for the Pharmacies in your area)?

Do you know if there is a parasitic or disease carrying insect or creature native to your area that is only kept in check by active local measures by the authorities?

Are their predator animals in your area only controlled by human intervention?

Do you know where your local large builder’s merchants are located for salvaging building and repair materials after TSHTF?

Do you know where the nearest MAIN DISTRIBUTOR not the local dealer for your primary vehicle so you can source parts after TSHTF?

Do you know if there is a sewage plant AND / OR a sewage outlet pipe within a mile of where you collect fresh water or sea food from?

Do you know if wild fires / forest fires occur in your area and are they only kept in control by preventative human intervention?

Is there a prison or detention centre of secure psych hospital close to your location?

Has your local military ever historically laagered up or deployed near your home?

Historically has there been Rabies or Hanta or Malaria etc in your area only kept in control by human intervention?

Is your local power station nuclear? (Bad) or Oil / Coal (Good for salvage) or NG

Is your neighbourhood on a likely route that could attract refugee columns?

All good things to think about. I started thinking about life without electricity, and over the last year have been making steps to having replacement options. Things like food storage, heat, and water and cooking. We take so much for granted with all the comforts we have in this country.

yeah.there are way to many comforts that we take for granted..im thinking along the lines of oil lamps and rechargeable solar lights for now, when it comes to lights.unless the icebergs melt..i dont have to worry about floods,on account we're on high ground.

Where the nearest PURE ground or artesian water source is? - Pretty much my well (or neighboring wells).

Is your gas / water / sewage systems gravity fed or pumped? - Pumped, which is why the plan includes an option for solar and manual.

Do you know the maximum historic flood level for your area? - We're pretty good here. Any flooding we get is pretty temporary, and our summer storms are pretty much the same as a major tropical system in rainfall.

Do you know where your local Pharmacy supply centre is (that’s the warehouse for the Pharmacies in your area)? - No idea, but there are a LOT of pharmacies, and a hospital pretty nearby, as well as other sources (Dollar General, Convenience Stores, Doctor Offices, etc.)

Do you know if there is a parasitic or disease carrying insect or creature native to your area that is only kept in check by active local measures by the authorities? - Mosquitoes. I suspect these would be an issue come SHTF. Never considered that one before, though our preps do include pest control methods.

Are their predator animals in your area only controlled by human intervention? - Not really. The occasional bobcat is all.

Do you know where your local large builder’s merchants are located for salvaging building and repair materials after TSHTF? - Lowes and some of the feed stores. Really about it.

Do you know where the nearest MAIN DISTRIBUTOR not the local dealer for your primary vehicle so you can source parts after TSHTF? - Yep, this is Ford Truck country. Even out of city limits, I'll have lots of options here.

Do you know if there is a sewage plant AND / OR a sewage outlet pipe within a mile of where you collect fresh water or sea food from? - No plant that close here.

Do you know if wild fires / forest fires occur in your area and are they only kept in control by preventative human intervention? - No wild fires

Is there a prison or detention centre of secure psych hospital close to your location? - Pretty long way away, next major city.

Has your local military ever historically laagered up or deployed near your home? - Nope

Historically has there been Rabies or Hanta or Malaria etc in your area only kept in control by human intervention? - Nope

Is your local power station nuclear? (Bad) or Oil / Coal (Good for salvage) or NG - Nearest station is NG, and that's pretty far. No nuclear one within 100 miles or so of here.

Is your neighbourhood on a likely route that could attract refugee columns? - Yes and no. Depends on how far off the Interstate they roam. This is one area I wish were a bit further away from.

Speaking of flood plains, You know, it amazes me that people buy property without checking the topography. A home is the largest investment most people will ever purchase, and they don't do research on it before committing thirty years of their life and money? Ask around, about 1 out of ten looked at a flood plane map before making an offer. Don't trust the realtor to be upfront on these things, there looking out for a commission and don't want to say anything negative. Do as much homework as you can. To bad there's no 'house fax' you can buy to look for hidden issues.

So true Brent, in the UK I was dumbfounded to see the folks along the Thames just west of London saying stuff like " I never thought the Thames would flood" and you just wonder how thick some of these people are. One idiot has been flooded 3 times in ten years and still does not make contingency plans,

Then you look at the Mississippi in the US and those floods in the 90s, I cannot remember the towns name but it flooded and the community stopped, looked at the mess then collectively decided to move the whole town to higher ground.

yeah..and in some cases,a person can just look at the home and/or yard, and see that its in a flood plain..but yet they still buy it any way..in which some build accordingly.by building the homes on stilts.then theres the fools, that build on slabs..aint life intresting? LOL

My brother in law's father retired on a bay on north carolina's coast. They built 8' high on stilts, and when a hurricane pushed all the water into the bay he said the house was two or three inches above the water. You might never think it could happen where you live, but mother nature has a way of being sneaky. I live in an earthquake zone thats long overdue. Guess no one is completely safe wherever they are. I did build my place with earth=quakes in mind though, at least.

There are communities near the lakes and tributairies here that if TVA dose'nt work the dam's right during the spring rains that would be under water over night .
