Pretty good link for making your own outhouse. http://www.instructables.com/id/Outhouse/?ALLSTEPS

Key features for me: Vent stack, vented and screened windows, using a real toilet seat. I wonder if folks have tried/thought about using septic treatments, to introduce the bacteria to break it down? Wonder how well that works? Of course, we'd also use sawdust and ash.

My mother inlaw(ish) has an eco septic loo for dog poo, It works well and the apple tree seems to like it.

I've been in the oilfield for 20+ years. Working two weeks hitches and 24 hour days far out in the boonies.
Outdoor relief was a way of life for me. The last five years porta potties finally became the norm on location. I love the creature comforts but am well versed in the basics. lol
Personally, most porta potties around construction sites are so nasty, I'd rather poo in the woods!

But the oilfield ones are cleaned, I mean pumped out, hosed down and sanitized inside from ceiling to floor, new treated water put in tank, and a restock of TP to boot, every three days.
Life is much easier in the patch now. lol

This thread is epic. snowflake, thanks for the laughs.... Seriously, though... This is an issue that is well documented in hunting & camping circles. It's said the first 3 days, no one can drop a deuce. I mean, if they can, then so be it, but.... No one can. I think it's the issue of getting acclimated to our surroundings. We are so used to things and we are so relaxed that things go smoothly. When in the woods, we are "Uptight" if you will. Even if we aren't, we are. We're enjoying it, but we're worried about the big buck, or the turkey and we just can't relax enough. After a few days, we are back in the routine and we are okay to poop again.

Back in the days, I would dig a hole, about 2-3ft away from a STRONG sapling. I would drop my drawers to my ankles and lean back. Your tail will actually be behind your heels, pants, & all. A hunting buddy of mine shared the idea with me and I thought it was nuts until I tried it.

No matter what though, it has to be FAR, like 50yds or more from the site, and there has to be hole dug & it has to be covered up.

I've been bushwalking for decades, mostly multi-day walks in remote areas and pooing in the bush is not even something to consider really. Just dig a hole (if possible), lean back on a rock or tree (also if possible), drop your load, and do the paper work. Job done.

We live full time in the bush as well and have both a chemical (as in an RV) and a composting toilet. Both can be dumped some distance from the camp with no problems.

I have to admit this, I was hiking with the family once and REALLY had to go. I snuck away and went in the woods pretty much by force, and used a safe-looking leaf to clean up a bit. I wasn't proud of it, and the hardest part was not hitting any of my clothes, but I got it done. Now i'm relatively confident I can get the business done, and know enough to do it off the beaten path to avoid attracting interest from other 'beings'.

I'm not proud of it, but I did it.

Peace.

Im sure everyone has heard the joke about the Bear and Rabbit............ pooing in the woods so I wont mention it .

I have never had an issue going poo in the woods. It is more natural then using a toilet. When we lived in Maine. I found the perfect old log to sit on and take a dump from there. Of course though sometimes in the spring I couldn't make it to that spot due to all the little water ways in the woods. But plenty of cover there with fir trees around, so no one could see me.
