Dealing with rabies post SHTF.

I know it sounds awful, but post SHTF, would promptly branding an animal bite with a hot metal implement (ie cauterization) prevent rabies?

Post SHTF, would human euthanasia be appropriate for someone with rabies?

Probably that's the most humane thing you could do.

How did people deal with rabies exposure before Pasteur? Was anything effective?

Only a PEP vaccine would prevent the rabies providing it was caught in time, once bitten one has a very small window to get medical help, if there is no way to get help put a bullet in one's head. Better be damn right the animal had rabies! Some animals foam at the mouth naturally or like a possum that foams to scare other animals and btw possums are totally immune to rabies

Rabies are going to be a problem post-shtf and shouldn't be taken lightly and it's going to have to be dealt with in a not so pleasant way!

Keven, I notice according to your information you're in Florida, rabies are going to be a problem but so is the risk of leprosy or any place that has armadillos, armadillos are known to carry leprosy, in a post-shtf one will see the following numbers rise. 100 to 150 cases a year reported in the US though in 2012 slightly over 6000 cases reported though easily treatable keep in mind most cases were in the South (in a pre-shtf)

Rabies affect 35,000 to 40,000 people a year in the lower 48 that require a PEP shot. Today leprosy is known as hansen's disease that is treated and generally cured using a multi drug therapy for a year again in a pre-shtf.

Leprosy, by the way, is very difficult to catch. It is probably the least contagious of the communicable diseases, and perhaps 95% of all people are immune. Also, it is my understanding that a person must be exposed in childhood in order to contract it, but I may be wrong.

rabies is deadly and before the cure if you came down with them it was a horrible way to die,now if you are really worried about it most feed stores and tractor supply's carries the rabies shot for dogs,it is simple to give just under the skin,it will not hurt you use it just like you would for a dog,,,,,,and I would bet they have a good shelf life,they are cheap buy a dozen or so

Dog vaccine prevents the deadly infection whereas the human vaccine prevents death, they are not the same, rabies shots must be done in a systematic sequence of 4 shots for humans 1, 3, 7, 14, on the first shot also a shot of globulin should be given. The rabies shot for dogs will accelerate death if you have rabies setting dormant Note, rabies can set dormant in humans for 10yrs before the symptoms appear it's rare but does happen. One can get shot(s) of globulin to build immunity but immunity will last up to 10yrs (maybe).

Also note, once the symptoms appear it is too late!

Another note: Foxes, skunks, raccoons, groundhogs, and bats are rabies vector species (rvs) and can carry the rabies virus without showing any of the symptoms, a side note, cattle can have rabies too and not show signs FYI.

I never said it was a cure,,,my line of thought was a yearly vaccination ,that way you would never need the cure

There is a sequence of globulin shots that help build an immunity to rabies but no set standard how long it will last in a human but that requires a shot a year for 10 years something to that affect, my grand daughter has to get them since she works with wild life for the Vets, she's not here for me to ask
