I thought those were verboten in the UK
No only if carried in public places, Its legal to own them in say your home or workshop or out fishing, rock climbing diving etc just as foixed blades are legal in the right environment. EG no scuba diver would leave the beach without his dive knife, no salmon Fisherman would go without his filleting knife, no outdoor instructor would be without his hacking blade. HOWEVER if I even carried a LEGAL EDC non locking blade into say a school, or youth club, or nightclub WITHOUT GOOD REASON I would be arrested. UK knife laws are nearly common sense laws, the only bit thats wrong is the locking blade ban. I have carried and deployed a lock knife since early 1972 never had any trouble with the law. I even used my knife to free a police woman and a stray dog totally tangled up in a hedgerow where the blackthord trapped them and the dog had about 10 yards of nylon rope attached to him and tangled in the hedge. Had to cut em both free, cop did not mind.

However I saw an American student arrested on Edinburgh railway station some years ago when he whipped out a locking blade on a multi tool and started cutting something off his back pack on the platform surrounded by other travellers. Poor sod looked up as he cut away at something to see an MP 5 only 2 ft in front of his nose :). I think they cautioned him but seized his multi tool. Our Cops carry knives so do some firefighters, paramedics, AA recovery mechanics, Garbage collectors, all sorts of tradesmen, campers, climbers, outdoorsy types. The laws are aimed mainly at inner city teenage gangbangers and about 80% of cops use common sense.

Doc as well as my asorted locking blades i also have a few UK legal blades IE non locking, not spring asisted with sub 3 inch blades for when I have to travel into horrible cities, we just have to be a bit more thoughtful about blade choice when we go out.

The bans are rather pathetic any way because most of the gangsters doing the stabbing are using craft knives, kitchen knifes, chisels and screwdrivers .... go figure
A LAWYER was stabbed to death in a huge shopping mall a few weeks ago in Newcastle by a young thug who stabbed him to death with a screwdriver, YES the idiots were straight to the media screaming that Screwdrivers should be more strictly controlled. You simply cannot take the Sheeple out of some people.

most of which can be found in any home or bought in a supermarket.

I've got scars from using non locking knives improperly when I was a kid. Over the years I've gained a little wisdom and don't have a problem with them anymore. I use a non locking Case Trapper and Case Muskrat non locking for skinning. I have a couple locking pocket knives to that I carry sometimes.
These knife restrictions seem silly and foreign to me. I don't know of any knife restrictions here where I live.

I would definitely just casually get out my switchblade to cut something random like that or open a package. I tend to use it for everything; it's really nice and so convenient because I can open and close with one hand. So I'd definitely get arrested in your country if I needed to cut anything when there happened to be other people around.
Kate, remember the old American adage from the United States in the 1980s? " There are people who would rather read about how a girl was raped and strangled with her own pantyhose then read about how she shot her attacker dead" It described your nations democrats in the 1980s but it applies even better to the British establishment today.

EVERY Chief Constable in the UK, plus the Government are telling us every week that the COPS need more officers, more money, more eqipment because vicious, violent and sex assaults are increasing at alarmed rates and have done so since the 1990s. But as we keep trying to point out IT IS NOT THE POLICE BEING ROBBED< RAPED OR MURDERED, its the law abiding citizen who those same senior cops and politicians have left defenceless.

A 999 call for the police averages 12 minutes in cities and towns, it can take up to an HOUR out of town, the police simply cannot protect us yet they deny us the right to defend ourselves.
I never heard of the saying - I guess because I didn't even exist back in the 80's - but it sounds pretty accurate. People want to hear the sensational stories of horrible things happening to others for some twisted reason. But I guarantee you if the same thing was about to happen to them, they wish they had a way to stop it. Maybe people just need a little empathy if they can't possess even a shred of common sense. Then we might get laws that are more beneficial to the average person.

Ah a youngster :) I cannot remember whom said it but it was someone of note in the 80s who said young women should NOT be be armed for some daft reason. Socialists believe on the STATE law authorities and of course themselves should be armed as they know better than the rest of us because we cannot be trusted with knives, guns, tazers etc. In reality it has Sweet Fanny Adams to do with fighting crime and everything to do with them being in charge without challenge.

I agree it's all about control.
