Seeing hikers up here is very common and nobody looks twice, seeing someone on the edge of one's property in full BDUs and heavy Military packs is going to cause a double take of the property owners and invoke a response and not a pleasant one, it would me in the heighten alert of a crises, once out into the forest away from people then change the wardrobe.

Anything dressing milspec or MOVING tactically near here after TSHTF is going to meet Mr Three Blade Broadhead, anyone approaching openly with clear hands non aggressively is going to be offered refreshments in return for gossip, anyone approaching then threatening will die wondering what my secret signal to my partner was.

A hip belt MUST fit. I went on a two night hike with a pack that had a panel for enclosing the shoulder straps if you take it in a plane. Well the hip belt was just too big for me and left most of the weight on my shoulders. I ended the trip after the first night due to the figure 8 blister on my foot.

Having the pack fit the size of your back is nice but not a deal breaker. If you can get by with a smaller back size bag then you will snag less stuff in dense areas.

Light is right. There is no need to carry a pot that weighs 16oz when a pot that does the same job weighs under 8oz. Weigh your gear and take the lighter option that meets all your needs.

a day pack must be light but there are different types of packs,,,what are we doing, just hiking, the pack is small,,,water bottle, compass , optics,,and a little food ,,,,and always a side arm and don't forget your knife
overnight, the bag grows to more food a bedroll and a fire starting device, and a small flashlight ,,,,

there are far to many reason to need a pack to describe each one so these are my peace time packs for hiking only...................
