So I saw someone on here recommend the cold steel Bowie machete for someone who wanted a good size Bowie if a person did not have a couple of hundred dollars to put into a high dollar Bowie the only difference I can see between the machete and the knife is the knife is heavier than the machete so the knife could be a better chopper and the machete might need to be sharpened a little more often would you all see anything more oh yeah i am thinking for it as a large fighter

Maybe enrolling in some form of mix Martial Arts that incorporate edge weaponry, I'm from an old school dated method of handling a blade that be fairbairn and sykes method, a lot has advanced since then. Using youtube and pictorials in handling a blade isn't a good way to learn sense all of it is based on predictability, I would suggest learning a method then pick the blade you feel comfortable with that matches the method you know and learned. Self taught in predictable practice will get you killed against an experience street fighter with a blade regardless the size of your blade.

Roninsensei has some really good information on blades with some good videos including him in one of his technique demo if I remember right!

You brought up hollywood a few times and your questionings reminded me of a movie kind of a sci-fi flick called the bullet proof monk, corny but a fun movie, one of the main characters used old Bruce Lee reels to practice Martial Arts, yes the character were impressive and over confidence in his self learned technique until he made a mistake against a street gang and had no other teaching how to get out of an unpredictable situation anyway it took a women to save his ### ;)

Cool idea I started doing martial arts and I know knives are one of the things they do because one or the teachers showed me his and it was huge something that they used in ww2 called a bolo knife but it kinda of looked like a Bowie to me and he said some of the guys use Bowie knives so I was just wondering if the knife had anything over the Bowie machete that I had not thought about

,,I would go with the machete I have owned the knife,,I carry a knife all the time and it has a 41/4 blade,it will do all the damage I need to get out of a bad spot, besides carrying one of those huge knifes draws attention the wrong kind of attention

i have a few fold out knives, but i'm thinking that's not the way to go. Have been looking around for something i can legally have on my at all times. can anyone suggest something within the 100 dollar range

So according to your states law any knife over three inches cannot be carried concealed. That's pretty limiting in some ways, and not, in other ways lol.. The Question becomes are you ok open carrying? If not, then Ive got some I would recommend and if so then there's a whole other list of fun cool stuff depending on how crazy you'd like to go... I'm the knife expert here with over 40 years of knife on knife and use of force training. Whatcha lookin for!!

i don't have a problem with open carry here. Big farm land around here, so you always see people wih a knife on their belts. Open carry gun state, starting to see more of that too. I conceal carry my gun, have a license.

So then self defense knife or general purpose? Self defense knife should be kept for that only. Like your gun being cleaned and good to go. General purpose means that its first job is cutting tasks and maybe used for self defense.

That is a general purpose blade made for skinning. It's nice but, a little over priced for 440c stainless steel. Also a 3 inch blade isn't very good for self defense. It'll work in the end but, not really it's purpose. It looks cool though. Self defense blades are going to be a fighting only knife. Like a tanto shape. Or Kukri shape. And a blade length of, at the min, 5 inches.
This is more survival type.

The one you were looking at would take some special training to be used as a good self defense option. It could mainly be a surprise weapon I guess.

All look good and all reasonably priced. after looking at the knife i posted i don't see it as something more than just fashion

For the price you can't beat the GI Tanto . I buy a couple each year to have onhand incase We forget someones Christmas gift . Never saw anyone disappointed when opening one .

I carry a large Bowie style knife made from a farriers rasp. Not for knife fighting but for use on the trap line or anytime I'm away from home. It works great as a small machete and for cutting wood stakes and for chopping frozen bait. It could be useful as a last resort if attacked by a mountain lion or bear too.
